December 11th, 1992:
GOOD BUT DULL.
This one has it's heart in the right place, but the overall result is just competent.
This is basically a character study of Mr. Spock. And it does wonders for him. The viewer really gets to see the First Officer in action for the first time. Interestingly his logic gets him nowhere, and it is an emotional response that saves the day.
Spock is in charge of his group. He is cold and efficient. Everyone hates him (So much for Gene R.'s acceptance philosophy!!!). No, not everyone. Scott is rather calm throughout. He does his duty.
Spock is rather puzzled as to why the enemy doesn't react the way he wants. Is Spock the equivalent of a desk-general out in battle for the first time? Probably not, since that analogy has negative connotations, and - to be honest - for much of the time I agreed with Spock's actions.
While the story, or the events in it, are not much to look at, there are many, many worthwhile points raised. You can therefore discuss the episode forever: Was Spock right? Wrong? Could any other approach have worked better?
Best Actor: Nimoy.
Worst Scene: The Final One.
N.B. The woman of the group is very badly written (The actress is crap, too!).
Overall: Not exciting, or novel, or interesting, as a story. But very thought-provoking in it's own way.
GRADE: B
