this side of paradise

Feb 13th, 1993: A MASTERPIECE.
EXCEPTIONAL IN SEVERAL AREAS.
It is gripping, mysterious, eerie, funny, sad, action-packed, thought provoking on many levels and extremely well acted by everybody. Picking out a favourite strand is almost impossible, but I suppose the tragic love story built around Mr. Spock is what moved me most.
There is also a strong examination of drugs and drug culture, plus the "hippie" view on life (it was the sixties, after all!).
You also have a look at Kirk: Portrait Of An Angry Man, a dark and violent man.
The episode affords us another look at Mr. Spock, as well, and at his unique make-up.
You also come across the poser: What Do We Need? happiness, fulfillment, obstacles, strife, belonging, challenge - - - what?
This is what you'd call a showcase episode of Star Trek. You show this to a skeptic in order to display all that is good about Trek.
N.B. The soundtrack is noticable and superb.
Also worth noting (and praising) are the "pop" sound effects. Each one jolted me in my seat.
Best Actor: Nimoy.
GRADE: A+
