Sculptor: Jacques Lamontagne Company: Direct 3-D Scale: 1/5 Material: resin Date Completed: 1996 Comments: This is my favorite model. As a boy, Doc Savage was my greatest hero. Doc was the creation of Lester Dent in 1933 for the pulp magazine of the same name. Writing under the house name of Kenneth Robeson, he himself wrote over a hundred stories, with others bringing the total up to 181, if I remember correctly. He is considered by many to be the first superhero. Superman himself was named after Doc's full name, Clark Savage, Jr. Doc has had various reincarnations over the years, but the strongest revival was Bantam Books' republishing efforts in the 60's and 70's with many of the paperback covers painted by James Bama. This sculpture by Jacques Lamantagne of Canada, is based on the first novel cover, "The Man of Bronze". Although you might find my color selection a bit odd, it does capture the essence of Doc that James Bama portrayed on the covers which I idolized as a young boy and continue to admire as an adult (so much so that I recently tracked down and purchased one of the original James Bama oil paintings). If you are interested in finding out more about Doc Savage, you can visit some of the many internet sites devoted to him by using the Doc Savage Web Ring at the bottom of this page. Two interesting points on the build up. About half-way through the build-up, I accidently dropped the model and it landed on the right hand which apparently had an air bubble in the resin. The result was an almost totally crushed and fragmented hand. What you see here is the result of my resculpturing with milliput the hand based on the photos included with the model. Not bad even if I say so myself. The second is the base. The rock is painted plaster of paris made from a terrain mold. You can find these at most hobby shops and are very useful for making inexpensive bases. |
