Sculptor: T. Holter Bruckner Company: Geometric Scale: 1/6 Material: resin Date Completed: 1995 Comments: I think this may have been my very first resin kit. Resin now is probably my favorite model material to work with as it gives very smooth surfaces and is easily carved. The details in a resin model are sharper and more defined, and you just can't beat that solid feel and weight that the hollow vinyl models lack. But resin takes a little more preparation than the vinyl kits which only need washing in hot water. Resin models require scrubbing with hot soapy water in order to remove the "release" chemicals that the manufacturers use to keep the model from sticking to the mold. I use a soft plastic brush to do this and have an old toothbrush I use for the fine detail areas. Recently I have also began scrubbing the model with that stuff mechanics use in garages to clean grease from their hands. It is a bit grainy and really removes the release well. A primer coat of paint is an absolute must in order for your paint to properly adhere to the resin. Unfortunately, I didn't know this at the time I did Shadowhawk, and when I went to dry brush the metallics I literally brushed the base coat off. At least this made stripping the model in order to start over easy. |
