Planets in the Mystaraspace System

All of the planets in the Mystaraspace system are named after various immortals (Modified from Old Immortal Set). The names are those given to the planets by the inhabitants of Mystara. Many of the planets are inhabited, and the inhabitants may have their own names for them.

The First Age The planets before 1000 AC

Planet Name Type Class Description
Ixion Fire Sphere

This is the primary planet in Mystaraspace, the planet which all other planets orbit. This planet is inhabited by entities from the Elemental Plane of Fire (see M4 for more details).
Empty Orbit

Valerious Earth Sphere

E

Hot
Mystara Hollow Earth Sphere

E

This is the Known World throughout the rise and fall of Blackmoor up until the rise of Nithia.
Tarastia Earth Sphere

E

Cold
Asterius Earth Flat

E

This planet was colonized by Blackmoor. After the Rain of Fire on Mystara., the immortals cause these people to forget their ancestry. Not all of the Blackmoorian artifacts are found and removed however.
Vanya Air Sphere

G

Called Eloysia by local inhabitants (see M4 for more details).
Khoronus Air Sphere + Rings

G

This air planet is surrounded by a torus of earth and water.
Ordana Earth Sphere

E

This is the Alphatian homeworld. Ordana's destruction ends this age. The planet is not destroyed, as such, but modified. The planet breaks up, most of the land mass transformed into air by powerful magics. Some survive this catastrophe and start to rebuild (see M1), but most flee to the other planets.
Protius Air Sphere

F

Empty Orbit

Comet Belt Asteroid Sphere

This sphere of icy comets orbits Ixion very close to the crystal sphere. Ships entering and exiting the sphere using portals must be careful to avoid impact with these fast moving objects.

Mystara

Mystara is a hollow world. There are two large openings, one in each of the poles. Although the polar openings are covered by a continual mist, the dim red glow of the inner sun can be seen from wildspace.

Spelljamming ships who try to enter the Hollow World through these portals are in for quite a surprise. Throughout the center of the entire planet (the center defined as the area of equal distance between the outer and inner surfaces) exists a strong anti-magical barrier. This barrier also extends across the polar openings. Any spelljamming ships which cross this barrier lose all control. There are three fates for a ship such as this. They may crash into one of the many floating continents which orbit the central sun. They may crash into the sun itself and be utterly destroyed. They may crash land on the surface of the Hollow World at some random location. It is possible to regain control of the ship before any of the previously mentioned events take place, however it is not very likely.

Leaving the Hollow World also presents a problem for spelljamming vessels. If their velocity through a polar opening is too slow, they may crash on the outer surface of Mystara. Ships which exit a portal at high velocities have a very good chance of regaining control in wildspace, however attaining a high velocity within the Hollow World is not advidsable due to the chance of collision with a floating continent. Alphatian wizards are currently charting the courses of the continents in order to calculate windows of opportunity for spelljamming ships to leave the Hollow World under their own power.

A more common practice for spelljamming vessels is to set down in the polar region (either on the inner or outer world) and hire a team to drag their ship across the anti magical barrier. Once the barrier has been passed, a spelljamming vessel continues under normal opperating conditions. The Alphatians have agreements with several Beastmen tribes to perform these towing services.

For more information about the surfaces of the Mystara consult the following TSR products. The Hollow World boxed set, Known World Gazetteers, The Savage Coast.

Vanya (also called Eloysia)

This air planet has several interesting features which will be described starting at the center of the planet and moving outward.

Many mages have been able to discern that Vanya radiates more heat than it normally should (by simply reflecting the light of Ixion, the sun). The reason for this is that at the center of the planet is a miniature sun. The sun is fairly dim and cold (by comparison to Ixion), but radiates quite enough energy to heat the interior of Vanya. Most of the heat is reflected back inside the planet due to its outer atmosphere (see description below), however enough escapes the planet to cause the noticeable difference in heat radiation that mages from Mystara have observed.

There are three layers of floating land masses inside of Vanya, which orbit its central sun. The orbits are not all on the same plane, but are spherical. Collisions are rare, but are not unheard of, however even when a collision occurs the damage is minimal due to the low velocities of the islands.

The lowest layer is inhospitable to all but the hardiest of creatures (those capable of living in extreme heat), or those using magical protection. Many fire elementals dwell here. Many of the floating nations also send protected mining expeditions here.

The second layer of land masses are plush, vegetative islands. This is where most of the Eloysian nations set up agricultural colonies.

The layer of islands farthest from the central sun, nearly 2000 miles higher than the agricultural layer, is where most of the nation states exist.

Finally, above the last layer of islands, exists the dense outer atmosphere of Vanya. The Eloysians call this layer the plenum, and many believe that it is the stuff that fills the rest of the universe. This is not the case however, as most spelljammers know. The plenum forms a dense, semi-solid coating around Vanya. Seen from the inside this layer of atmosphere is an amorphous gray in color, however seen from wildspace it is a vortex of colors. Travel through the plenum is very dangerous, as the thick substance and the storms puts a great amount of stress on ships. The plenum is also the cause of the formation of the islands. Throughout the ages, some of the plenum solidifies and drops into the inner atmosphere of Vanya becoming an island. Eventually the islands drift into the central sun and are vaporized, their material blown through the planet as solar wind until it comes in contact with the plenum again, where the process starts all over.

Very nearly every species and governmental type can be found on at least one of Vanya's orbital islands.

Ordana (the former Alphatia)

This planet was the Alphatians home world. Originally a class E earth world, the planet has swelled in size and become a class F air world. The interior of Ordana is quite cold and the air is very thin (except around land masses where it becomes thicker and warmer). The interior is also separated by a plane of asteroids, effectively separating the planet into two hemispheres. Travel through the asteroids is hazardous. In the center of the field a great whirlpool exists. Travel across the whirlpool (for ships designed for travel on water) is slightly less hazardous than going straight through the asteroids.

The southern hemisphere is dominated by astral winds that buffet ships around. Travel in this hemisphere is difficult. Many small islands (some natural and some artificial) populate this region, however most inhabitants (Alphatian descendants) are not receptive to any stimulation due to zzonga fruit addiction.

The northern hemisphere is free of zzonga addiction, and hence the Alphatian surviors managed to create several cultures here. These include three nations (Delthar, Belthar, and Gammar), a mighty Merchants Guild, and an orginized band of pirates (who are descendants of Alphak's Followers of Fire). Delthar is a Lawful society ruled by a king and a powerful theocracy. Belthar is a Neutral republic, who uses blue dragons to tow their ships. Gammar is a Chaotic magocracy whose phase ships are a force to be reconed with. For more information on these nations consult module M1 Into the Maelstrom.

Although all of these nations have sky ships (some quite powerful, like the phase ships) none of them can attain spelljamming speeds. Treat them all as if under the power of a tactical helm.
