I took the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II to find out Q's personality. It turns out that his temperament a Rational NT (which stands for iNtuitive Thinker).
His personality type is ENTP (Extroverted iNtuitive Thinking Percieving).

Q is more Expressive than Attentive (it said he wasn't attentive at all! :D), more Introspective than Observant, more Tough than Tender, and more Probing than Scheduled.

What Keirsey says about Rational NTs:

RATIONAL NTs, being ABSTRACT in communicating and UTILITARIAN in implementing goals, can become highly skilled in STRATEGIC ANALYSIS. Thus their most practiced and developed intelligent operations tend to be marshalling and planning (NTJ organizing), or inventing and c onfiguring (NTP engineering). And they would if they could be wizards in one of these forms of rational operation. They are proud of themselves in the degree they are competent in action, respect themselves in the degree they are autonomous, and feel confident of themselves in the degree they are strong willed. Ever in search of knowledge, this is the "Knowledge Seeking Personality" -- trusting in reason and hungering for achievement. They are usually pragmatic about the present, skeptical about the future, solipsistic about the past, and their preferred time and place are the interval and the intersection. Educationally they go for the sciences, avocationally for technology, and vocationally for systems work. Rationals tend to be individualizing as parents, mindmates as spouses, and learning oriented as children. Rationals are very infrequent, comprising as few as 5% and no more than 7% of the population.

What Socionics says about ENTPs:

ENTP - Inventor

ENTPs normally have a long, slim figure. Other parts of the body are also stretched, especially the legs and fingers. They often have rounded shoulders. Their nose is often projected or elongated. Sometimes ENTPs have a characteristic inwardly sloping chin that smoothly converts to the neck while the upper jaw is more prominent. Because of their particular physical structure their clothes always seem to fit pretty badly, often slipping down and hanging off them in an unflattering manner. Their buttons also seem to have a habit of falling off.
[Hey! I happen to think that Q looks really good in that Starfleet uniform! And it doesn't HAVE buttons!! -JJ]

ENTPs usually have a distant, far away look in their eyes and it often seems as though they are paying little attention to what is going on. During conversation ENTPs like to play with objects, like a pen for example, often accidentally breaking it. They may gesticulate when passionately telling a story.

ENTPs do not know how to keep the right psychological distance with people. This becomes especially noticeable during long term interaction. One day they can be friendly and the next day they can be completely opposite. They often behave unceremoniously and can rudely butt in on others conversations. ENTPs can also find it difficult to evaluate how others feel about them and therefore can make mistakes when choosing friends.

ENTPs like to explore everything and are usually completely unaware of how others react to this. They often propose ideas that although have great potential are completely impractical at the time. As usual, they soon forget about that idea and generate a new one, which has no less potential and originality but has no logical connection with the previous. ENTPs pay little or no respect to their past achievements. They hardly ever admit when they are at fault. Even if they apologise formally they usually continue to behave the same as before.

ENTPs are interested in and talk about everything that is new and unusual even if it is not in their main field of knowledge. It is as if they are magnetised by all brand new theories and are fascinated by all phenomena that can not be explained with logic or reason, for example: ESP, telekinesis and UFO's.
[But Q has telekinesis and the Enterprise is a UFO... oh, never mind. -JJ]

They cannot logically explain their ideas as they are always intuitive and vague. Most people cannot fully comprehend their concepts, they simply believe or do not believe.

The main peculiarity of ENTPs behaviour is an incredible absent-mindedness. They usually leave items where they used them and have a tendency to constantly lose smaller objects. ENTPs work place and personal belongings are often kept in disarray . They invariably forget what they have already done and what they need to do. However, they are quick and shrewd in day to day matters, taking advantage of every opportunity that arises. Because of this others may consider them to be crafty or shifty.

The other main peculiarity of ENTPs behaviour is the ability to mobilise in extreme conditions. If somebody puts pressure on them they immediately counterattack, often with more than equal force. They also like to give people advice on how to extricate themselves from difficult entanglements, often proposing the most radical solutions. ENTPs cannot perform simultaneous tasks quickly. If they are not interested in a particular job, they try to leave it until the last moment. Then in very short period of time they can complete all awaiting jobs, but of course the quality suffers.

One more peculiarity is the element of chaos and destruction that ENTPs bring to every field of their activity. This is especially noticeable in well established institutions where strong discipline is commonplace. However, they implement this chaotic element creatively, generating reform from the destruction. Because of this quality ENTPs often become leaders.

I dunno. Sounds like Q to me. :)

What PT Online says about ENTPs:

ENTP - PART TWO - INNER VIEW

Your strongest virtue is a well developed ability to think inventively. Very often you come up with original and radical ideas. You have the ability to foresee the development of many different concepts. Your well developed intuition often helps you to make the right decisions. You are well able to understand the essence of concepts and phenomena. You are interested in and read a lot about everything that is new and unusual. But there is a hidden danger in this. You can go so far into the clouds that people who are close to you can feel alienated and therefore become distant from you.

The vehicle with which you realise your intuitive ideas is your logic. You aspire to substantiate your ideas logically and thereby convince others of their use. Because of this ability to convince you often end up being surrounded by supporters of your ideas. You are an enemy of everything that is outdated and therefore very receptive to originality. However excessive elitism can lead you to become a total nihilist.

You have difficulty in understanding the boundaries of relations between people. It is especially difficult to understand other peoples true disposition towards you. After you have intuitively understood a person you tend to lose interest in them as if you do not know what to do after. This may turn the person against you. You also have difficulty identifying your enemies. Do not rush to conclusions when evaluating others. Try to make the situation clearer by focusing on their contributions.

You also have difficulties in keeping good stable relations with people who know you well. You may accidentally show tactless behaviour, often destroying maintained harmony. To prevent this try to control your reflex reactions to peoples behaviour. Do not be too democratic in your business dealings as this can soon lead to over familiarity and can affect your authority among others. When conveying your ideas try to be tactful and show more detachment. You do not want to shock people or create new enemies with your revelations and bluntness.

You find it hard to keep yourself organised and disciplined. Because of this you often let everyday matters get out of control. This often leads to the cancellation of business plans, interruption of your work routine and interference in family matters. Try to complete your tasks on time. Do not overload yourself with work, as you do not respond well to pressure, often digging your heels in and moving even slower. Take up some form of physical activity as this will help you to increase your sense of well being. It will also help to improve your self-control, discipline and personal organisation.

Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving

by Brian Yamauchi (yamauchi@ces.cwru.edu)

ENTPs are inventors, innovators, explorers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries. ENTPs are always looking over the next horizon, trying to push the edge of the envelope, and trying to do what other people say can't be done. What is -- is never good enough. ENTPs have a vision of what could be and a powerful drive to turn their visions into reality.

ENTPs value progress and change, both in their personal lives and in the world as a whole. The idea of a static, unchanging life -- appealing to some SJs -- is abhorrent to an ENTP. ENTPs are always seeking out new experiences, new ideas, and new achievements. While other types may worry that the world is changing too fast, ENTPs are more likely to be frustrated that the world isn't changing fast enough -- in the direction they want it to move.

Like other NTs, ENTPs tend to have a rational, empirical view of the world and often have a strong and early interest in science and technology -- but this worldview and these interests are expressed differently in each of the types.

While an INTP may be content to design a system or even just prove it is possible to design a system -- ENTPs want to design and build the system and see it working with their own eyes. In this way, they resemble INTJs in their goals -- but not in their approach toward achieving those goals. INTJs tend to work carefully and methodically with a detailed plan of action -- ENTPs are more likely to have bursts of inspiration that are translated into reality through intermittent periods of extremely intense activity.

ENTPs tend to be sociable -- they enjoy interacting with interesting people and doing interesting things with others. The key word is "interesting". ENTPs have a low boredom threshold, and unlike EF-types, they have little desire to be around other people simply for the sake of being around other people.

More than other NTs, ENTPs value intense experiences -- including emotional experiences -- and are less likely than other NTs to attempt to suppress their emotions. When ENTPs are up, they're on top of the world, facing unlimited possibilities, unbounded horizons, and an exhilarating future. When ENTPs are down, the universe lacks any redeeming qualities, whatsoever.

ENTPs are risk-takers -- flying, skydiving, scuba diving, hang gliding, mountain climbing, and fast cars all have a strong appeal for ENTPs. Unlike STP risk-takers, however, ENTPs are less likely to become experts in a particular activity, and more likely to sample a wide variety of different experiences.

ENTPs have little respect for rules that fail to serve a useful purpose. Rules that significantly inhibit the ability to get things done will be changed, finessed, or simply ignored.

While ENTPs value their personal relationships, they find it easier than some other types (in particular, NFs and SFJs) to leave those relationships behind. An ESFJ, for example, might be terrified by the thought of leaving all of their friends behind and moving alone to a new city. An ENTP in the same situation may miss those friends, but at the same time be looking forward to the new people, new places, new experiences, and new opportunities they may find in their new environment.

Famous ENTPs:

U.S. Presidents:

Christopher Columbus
Wernher von Braun
Richard Feynman
Arthur C. Clarke
Francis Ford Coppolla
Steven Jobs
Neil Peart

Fictional ENTPs: Indiana Jones
Geordi LaForge (of Star Trek: TNG)
Calvin (of Calvin & Hobbes)
Jason Fox (of Fox Trot)

[The following is the description I find most apt. -JJ]

Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving

by Marina Margaret Heiss (mmh0m@poe.acc.virginia.edu)

"Clever" is the word that perhaps describes ENTPs best. The professor who juggles half a dozen ideas for research papers and grant proposals in his mind while giving a highly entertaining lecture on an abstruse subject is a classic example of the type. So is the stand-up comedian whose lampoons are not only funny, but incisively accurate.

ENTPs are usually verbally as well as cerebrally quick, and generally love to argue--both for its own sake, and to show off their often-impressive skills. They tend to have a perverse sense of humor as well, and enjoy playing devil's advocate. They sometimes confuse, even inadvertently hurt, those who don't understand or accept the concept of argument as a sport.

ENTPs are as innovative and ingenious at problem-solving as they are at verbal gymnastics; on occasion, however, they manage to outsmart themselves. This can take the form of getting found out at "sharp practice"--ENTPs have been known to cut corners without regard to the rules if it's expedient -- or simply in the collapse of an over-ambitious juggling act. Both at work and at home, ENTPs are very fond of "toys"--physical or intellectual, the more sophisticated the better. They tend to tire of these quickly, however, and move on to new ones.

ENTPs are basically optimists, but in spite of this (perhaps because of it?), they tend to become extremely petulant about small setbacks and inconveniences. (Major setbacks they tend to regard as challenges, and tackle with determin- ation.) ENTPs have little patience with those they consider wrongheaded or unintelligent, and show little restraint in demonstrating this. However, they do tend to be extremely genial, if not charming, when not being harassed by life in general.

In terms of their relationships with others, ENTPs are capable of bonding very closely and, initially, suddenly, with their loved ones. Some appear to be deceptively offhand with their nearest and dearest; others are so demon- strative that they succeed in shocking co-workers who've only seen their professional side. ENTPs are also good at acquiring friends who are as clever and entertaining as they are. Aside from those two areas, ENTPs tend to be oblivious of the rest of humanity, except as an audience -- good, bad, or potential.

Additional famous ENTPs:

Alexander the Great
Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart
Sir Walter Raleigh

Fictional: Mercutio, from _Romeo_and_Juliet_
Horace Rumpole, from John Mortimer's _Rumpole_of_the_Bailey_ series
Dorothy L. Sayers' detective Lord Peter Wimsey

From: jabutt@sacam.OREN.ORTN.EDU Subject: Re: ENTP Profile (was Re: populational distribution of types?) Date: 30 Jun 94 (revised)

From an outsider's (non-ENTP's) view, for 'typewatching' purposes, there are a couple of characteristics I'd like to add:

1) the need to have areas of expertise/excellence/uniqueness in which one is second to none. I've never beaten an ENTP at his/her own game--not in the final analysis. (e.g., just tonight, my neighbor who is recuperating from an illness received a call from an ENTP friend offering his special recipe for tea. The instructions required only the finest ingredients, a particular brand of orange juice, tea made with a ball--none of those horrid teabags--..., which will of course make the *best* tea of which he himself drinks 50 gallons each winter!)

2) members of this type could easily fit under the rubric: _intelligensius anarchus_. As one of my coworkers put it recently, "speaking of anarchists, how's [resident ENTP] doing?"

I would also like to offer a few famous ENTPs:

U.S. Presidents

Thomas Edison, definitely a 'working model' man
Lewis Carrol (_Alice in Wonderland_)
Sir Winston Churchill
Valerie Harper
Bill Cosby
Suzanne Pleshette
Tom Hanks
John Candy
John Sununu
Weird Al Yankovick (?sp)
Marilyn Vos Savant
Alfred Hitchcock

Fictional Characters: 'Q' (ST-NG)
Bugs Bunny
Wile E. Coyote
Garfield
