Welcome to Wolf Song

Though I lived with wolves for seven years, and many say that is a lifetime, I find it very hard to write about the wolf friends that lived with me for those seven years. I was very naive about wolves when I first shared space with these critters. I guess I had seen too many disney movies like so many other people and had a lot of romantic ideas about wolves. I didn't count on them being so smart or all the mischief that wolves that are dometicated can get into. I also didn't count on the fear that they would generate for my neighbors and landlord. Now I lived on 90 acres of old growth forest and my nearest neighbor was two miles away so one would think that was plenty of room for me and a wolf pack. Think again.

The first wolf I shared space with ( I always say shared space with not owned because no one owns a wolf. ) was Wea. She was given to my daughter by a Lakota Indian woman. She gave her to my daughter because she was alone after school while I worked on that ninety acres with no phone. The woman had brought her back from South Dakota from the reservation. Wea's Mother had been shot and there were six cubs Wea is the only one that lived. Wea means "Little Girl" in the Lakota language. She was four months old and though the woman told me she was giving me this little critter because she saw in a vision she was meant for my daughter, I am sure some of that is true but what was also true is that she ate underwear and socks. I think the womans husband after losing all of his underwear and socks to this little wolf said it is either the wolf or me. She was almost a year old and small even for a timber wolf. She was broad and muscular in the shoulders and looked like she was going to be large but she never did grow. She had a mask face and a coat black as night shot through with silver. She had a happy puppy face that always looked like it was smiling. She still looks like a puppy fifteen years later. People always exclaim when I walk with her oh what a cute puppy. Well some of the first lessons I learned about wolves was this one was teething so she ate everything she could get her teeth on. She ate the gear shift in my truck. We bought her teddy bears to chew on and she was always running around with one in her mouth. She also loved to chase my rabbits. I wish I had videos or maybe I don't of me chasing the wolf that was chasing the rabbit as my daughter ran behind shouting "Don't hurt my wolf!" Finally in self denfense after Wea had gone to the library with me one day and ate a diet book, I bought her a mussel to wear in the truck when I wasn't watching her. She looked like a baseball player in it. The lady who gave her to us always told a different story about how much wolf she was sometimes she was full bloodied and sometimes she was half greyhound so we called her wea woof. We didn't care if she was wolf at all but we knew she was a woof. (smile)

The next lessons we learned about wolves from wea was soon after we got her. She attacked the neighbors female mutt who was pregnant. They always had been best friends and when Wea bit her in the belly and tried to kill her pups we were really puzzeled. Wea came into heat soon after that and disappeared. We looked and looked and had all the neighborhood looking for her. Finally in desparation we went to the dog pound. We didn't find her but what we did find were two Mckenzie River Wolves who were about to be put down when we came. We were advised not to take them but we didn't listen. They wore expensive leather collors that had been hooked to a cable run, part of the cable run was still on the collors. That should of told us something about what kind of escape artists wolves are then and there. Anyway I took these two huge wolves to work with me and left them in the back of my camper shell until my lunch hour. I made some calls to some people who owned wolves and they explained to me that when a female comes into heat only one alpha wolf has pups and that is why Wea had attacked the neighbor dog who was pregnant. They also told me she was probably around just had gone to get bred. Well in the meantime I took these other two big males for a walk or I should say they took me for a run. For they dragged me through a park and ran away. I chased them through back yards and finally almost gave up and went back to my truck and started to leave at that point they came running and jumped into the back of the truck. So I took the rest of the day off and took them home. Now you are not going to believe this but as I pulled into the yard here came Wea. She was thrilled I had found her two new husbands. She never ran away again.
