Civilians:
Elim Garak
Garak history prior to his excile to Deep Space Nine is somewhat vague. At one point Garak was at a very high position in the Obsidian Order and through some sort of scandal he was exciled. Garak thought of Enabran Tain as a mentor rather than father, if fact the one moment that Enabran was really proud of Garak was when he was trying to ride a horse at the age of 5. It is unclear who Garak's mother is, but it might be Enabran's house maid Mila. Garak and Mila have some sort of connection, yet still not understood. While in the Obsidian Order, Garak was given a neural implant which would relieve the pain if he was ever interroragated, but during his time on DS9 he found his surroundings so unbareable that he turned it on and never shut it off. He later suffered withdrawel symptoms when the implant started to break down, but was treated by his friend Dr. Bashir. Garak and Dr. Bashir's friendship is probably one of the things that isn't a lie. When Ziyal moved to live on DS9, Garak's reaction was that of fear because her father was Garak's worst enemy. Soon the fear subsided, and Ziyal and Garak conjured up a friendship which later evolved through mostly Ziyal's eyes an intimate relationship. Garak was truly hurt when Ziyal died, yet he was still baffled by why she loved him. Surprisingly, Garak fought on the Federation's side, and was vital in getting the Romulans to join in the fight against the Dominion.
Quark
Quark...does he even have a last name? It's been mentioned that he is the son of Keldar and Ishka, and that he has a younger brother named Rom. There was always sibling rivalry between Quark and Rom, but it is clear that Rom is the one that Ishka favors the most. At the age of ascension, Quark left to persue a career. His father told him to stay on Ferenginar, but Quark followed the rule of Aquisition, which stated "Home is where the heart is, but the stars are made of Latinum." So Quark ended up owning a bar at Deep Space Nine. During the Cardassian Occupation, Quark met a Cardassian woman named Natima Lang, whom Quark really did love. Natima appeared again on DS9, but a different woman, so Quark had to break up with her again. It was Quark and Sisko who first made contact with the Dominion, and it was Quark who later on freed Kira, Leeta, Jake, and Rom from their holding cells so they could help the Federation retake the station. Let it not be said that Quark doesn't love Moogie(Ishka, Quark's mom), because in one incident the Dominion capture Moogie and Quark and his associates rescue her.
Rom
Rom, Quark's brother, left home after the age of ascension, and started his career as a waiter for his brother's bar. Rom is somewhat different from most Ferengi in that he places more value in life than in latinum. His son was also the only Ferengi to join Starfleet, and he even married a Bajoran woman, whom he does love. Rom was also the mastermind behind the self replicating mines that protected DS9 during the Dominion/Cardassian invasion, and the one to disable the station's defenses to allow the Federation to retake the station.
Leeta
Leeta, like most Bajorans grew up the same way Major Kira did, poverty stricken. Then she was hired by Quark to be a Dabo girl, where she met Rom. Through a humorous courtship, Rom and Leeta soon married. At one point during the Dominion/Cardassian invasion, Leeta was held in a holding cell because her husband Rom was the mastermind behind the defense parameter.
Jake Sisko
Jake is the son of Captain Benjamin Sisko, and a writer. During the battle of Wolf 359, his mother was killed in an attack by the Borg, and there after his father and he stayed on Earth for a while. When his dad and he moved to DS9, he was taught by Mrs. O'brien where he met his best friend Nog. During the Dominion/Cardassian invasion of the station, Jake chose to stay behind so he could report what was happening on the station to the Federation. Jake also got involved with Major Kira and Odo's underground resistance, to Kira's and Odo's disapproval. Since the death of Dax, Jake has moved back with his father to his grandfather's restaurant.
Tora Ziyal
Tora Ziyal was born to a Bajoran woman named Tora Naprem and a high ranking Cardassian official Gul Dukat. She was raised on Terok Nor, until the Cardassians pulled out from Bajor; then her mother and she boarded a transport to Lessipia to live there so Ziyal wouldn't face retribution because of her mixed heritage. When the transport, Ravinok, was pronounced missing, her father assumed she and her mother were dead. Ziyal was not dead, but her mother was, and she and the Cardassian and Bajoran crew were forced to work in dilithium mines under the Breen. When word came that there might have been survivors from the Ravinok, Gul Dukat and Major Kira Nerys set out to look for them, but unbeknowst to Kira, Gul Dukat's intention was not to rescue Ziyal, but to kill her to assure his position would not be threatened. Kira convinces Dukat to not kill Ziyal, which he doesn't regret, but when he returns to Cardassia with her, he is stripped of rank, and commissioned to an old freighter. Then, under the advice of Major Kira, Dukat lets Ziyal live on DS9 under the care of Kira, so that she'd lead a better life rather than chasing Klingons with her father. On DS9, she made friends with her family's worst enemy, Garak. One day, Dukat told Ziyal to come with him to Cardassia because he was going to lead an offensive against the Federation. She refused because she wanted to stay with Garak, this angered Dukat so much that he disowned Ziyal. During the war, Kira moves Ziyal to Bajor to stay with Kira's resistance friends. When the Dominion/Cardassian force took over the station, Dukat brought back Ziyal to live with him on the station, enforcing that Dukat forgives Ziyal and no longer disowns her. Then, on the eve of the Federation invasion, Damar shoots Ziyal from the shadows, while she confesses to her father that she helped the prisoners escape from their holding cells, yet right before she died Dukat forgave her for what she did.
