UFOs in Maine

Information listed in the below states were compiled from a number of Internet sources that have databases listing reported sightings. Due to a number of duplications of sighting reports in those various sources, it is somewhat difficult to give credit where credit is due to the originating source. Therefore, this site acknowledges and gives credit to all the sources of these reports presented to you collectively now, as I cannot determine the origin of each particular sighting report: National UFO Reporting Center, MUFON, NH MUFON, MA MUFON, VT MUFON, CT MUFON, Miningco.com's UFO/Alien web site, Magonia, Project Bluebook, Filer's Files, National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, and anyone else who made a report or who I missed ! Plus, we can't forget the people that had the sighting experience and had the courage to come forward and report their incident so the world could know.

Acton	1984 October 1	Witnesses report traveling along a country road and seeing a very bright light in the sky. Upon pulling over to get a better look they saw a triangular shaped craft with lights along the edges move above them and it did not make any sound. They witnessed it for about 15 seconds when it suddenly accelerated and disappeared from the area. - NUFORC
Andover	1997 February	A witness reported a domed saucer hovering over the forest north of Andover. - UFO Roundup
Ansen	1999 October 3	Witnesses reported seeing a glowing ball of light on the same evening from different locations (approx 1 mile apart). There wasn't a sound accompanying this object's travel, though it seemed to be very close as it moved overhead. At first thought it was a shooting star but it was moving slower and was much larger than any falling star or meteor. It also moved across the night sky not plummeting downward. The object was moving in a North / North East direction overhead, from the outside porch of their house. One witness was driving roughly in the same direction as the object when it was spotted overhead and in front of them. Also on Saturday the 2nd, they had three sonic booms and the sound of more than one aircraft after each boom. - NUFORC
Ashland	1999 June 27	A witness reports standing outside and seeing a light in the distance that was very far away headed in a NE direction. It was moving very slowly. At first he thought it was a plane, but when it got closer he wasn't sure. He got his binoculars and looked, but it didn't look like a plane. After about a minute of watching it with the binoculars, it suddenly disappeared. He quickly put down the binoculars and saw that it had quickly picked up speed and was now almost out of view. The craft was a flying triangle. It had seven lights on it that he could see. It was flying at about normal altitude for a plane. The lights were a light blue color. When the craft made its rapid speed increase, the lights became red. There was only the one object and all it did was fly in a straight line. When he first saw it, it was moving very slowly. About half a minute after it had passed over his house, its speed increased so much that it was beyond the horizon in a few seconds. - NUFORC

Bangor	1998 February 27	While driving along a highway, a witness reports seeing a flashing white light move rapidly across the sky. There did not appear to be an aircraft with this light. - NUFORC
Bangor	1965 March 23	A man reported driving near Bangor when he met a huge domed disc hovering over the road. As he drove towards it his lights dimmed and the radio stopped. Believing he was in danger, he pulled out a pistol and fired on the disc. On the third shot, the disc took off at tremendous speed. - UFO Encyclopedia
Bar Harbor	1998 October 11	Two witnesses reported seeing a large fast moving bright green sphere shaped object crossing the sky. It made no sounds and subsequently disappeared behind some mountains in the distance. The witnesses did not feel this was a meteor due to the bright green color of the object. - NUFORC
Bar Harbor	1998 March 16	Two witnesses reported seeing an unknown object moving slowly across the sky that appeared to have four blinking lights. The sighting lasted for about 20 seconds. - NUFORC
Beals	1998 January 10	Two children were reported to have seen an unknown white light travel rapidly across the sky and then shoot straight upwards and disappear. - NUFORC
Belfast	1999 February 14	Two witnesses reported seeing a bright green sphere shaped object in the evening sky from a window of their house. The object traveled from south to north and the sighting lasted for about 5 to 7 seconds. - NUFORC
Belfast	1945 March	A man reported observing an elongated object flying very slowly tilted toward the earth. It appeared to crash into some trees at the end of a clearing. The enormous craft seemed undamaged as it rested briefly on the ground, then lifted again with a humming sound, started to spin, released a shower of fine silvery threads, and rose straight up, disappearing in seconds. - Magonia
Brunswick Naval Air Station	1966 February 16	A luminous object was reported to have landed in the woods. It showed flashing red, blue, and green lights. A second object was later seen to join the first one. - Magonia
Caribou	1955 December 21	A report of a round, very bright gold domed disc made a short climb, rotated, hovered and then accelerated during a 6-8 minute sighting. - Project Bluebook
Deer Isle	1998 January 27	Multiple reports of sightings described as bright blue lights with yellow vertical streaks and some reports of explosion like sounds - Gordon J. Gianninoto; Bangor Daily News 1/30/98
Dexter	1999 March 6	A witness reports a large ball of blue light that kind of hovered for a moment then completely disappeared. There was no sound. - NUFORC
Dexter	1971 September 1	A witness reports that as a youth he observed a silver colored sphere shaped object in the sky that was reflecting sunlight that was shining on it. After about a minute the object disappeared. - NUFORC
East Corinth	1992 July 26	A witness reports seeing an unknown possibly cigar shaped craft hover the area at approximately a 100 ft to tree top levels, and travel at various speeds before accelerating and leaving the area. A red colored light was seen on the underside and white colored lights at the sides and ends. There appeared to be a humming sound coming from the object. - NUFORC
East Machias	1998 August 5	While traveling along a highway, a part time law enforcement officer reported seeing a light in the sky that appeared to get brighter and brighter as he got closer to it. His vehicle appeared to give signs like it was about to stall so the operator pulled over. At that time the light got dimmer and subsequently flickered out. The witness reports his police radio failed to work during this time. No other lights were observed. - NUFORC
Ellsworth	1963 August 13	For over an hour an entire family witnessed an elliptical object at ground level. It had lights on its entire length and occasional flashes at both ends. - Magonia
Fairfield	1999 October 15	Witnesses report a light that seemed odd in the sky and thought maybe it was a plane since it was too fast to be a helicopter. This particular object just didn't seem right. It had one continuous light, none blinking, and it didn't follow the usual flight path of the usual planes and it seemed to fly very close and between other planes flying by. Eventually it took off, not away into the horizon, but up into the sky. - NUFORC
Freedom	2000 March 10	A couple were driving on an unlit road 2 hours after sunset, and saw a light, brilliant bluish or greenish white at the center with a diffuse halo around it, fly from right to left across the road in front of their car. There might have been two lights close together at the center of the object. They could not discern an outline. Their best guess as to size and distance is something about the size of a passenger jet at 500 to 1000 feet altitude, but traveling at least two or three times as fast as one would expect to see a plane move. They were driving north, and the object crossed their path moving from east-southeast to west-northwest. They saw it traverse about two-thirds of the sky, in a straight line. Then it suddenly disappeared well before it reached the western horizon. One of them saw it change color to bright red for an instant before it winked out. There were patches of light haze, but stars were clearly visible throughout the sky. The driver immediately stopped the car and scanned the sky to be sure there were no clouds it could have flown into and also flagged down the next car that passed. Its two occupants had seen the same thing, including the disappearance and color change. All four of them agreed that they heard no sound from it whatsoever. In fact, these two witnesses had watched it for several seconds longer than the first couple, and had shut off their car's engine and rolled down the windows to listen. - NUFORC
Gardiner	1998 April 4	Witnesses reported looking out their house windows and seeing a bright yellow circle shaped object hovering about a 1000 ft over the trees. It was observed moving up and down during an approximate 5 minute sighting before moving over the house and disappearing. - NUFORC
Gorham	1997 July 11	A report was made of a cigar shaped object traveling high and slowly across the sky. - NUFORC
Harborside	1947 July 3	An astronomer watched for about 10-15 seconds while ten very light objects, with two dark forms to their left, moved like a swarm of bees to the northwest. A loud roar was heard. - Dr McDonald, Project Bluebook
Hartland	1954 April 24	A witness reports seeing a large silver oblong object with a dome and a flashing light fly straight and level and then straight up. The sighting lasted for about 15 minutes. - Project Bluebook
Kennebunk	1981 June 28 & 29	Carol Palmero was sitting in her backyard at about 2 p.m. when she saw a UFO pass overhead. The object was shaped somewhat like a football with rounded ends, made no noise and flew at a steady rate of speed from NE to west. The following day, at about 9 p.m., Fire Chief Ramon Nolette was standing in front of the dispatch station when he saw a green and white light go 1000 to 1,500 ft into the air. 20 minutes later he saw another one. After Nolette called the Coast Guard he received calls from more than fifteen people asking what the lights over the water were. Other calls to the Coast Guard came from Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Wells, Ogunquit and Old Orchard Beach. A boat was sent out at 9:20 p.m. to look for the source, but the lights were not seen again.- (Joe Graziano, Press Reports, APRO Bulletin, November 1981, pg. 8.)
Kittery	1973 August 1	Two witnesses reported seeing a small bright light in the sky heading rapidly out to sea and then witnessed four jets from a local AFB heading in the same direction apparently after this light. - NUFORC
Kittery	1966 April 5	4 witnesses reported seeing a landed object. It took off, hovered for a while and left. ( no description available ) - Magonia
Lamoine	2000 September 30	Witnesses reported that on a clear night with No clouds in sight, to the right of where they were parked, looking toward Salisbury Cove, Maine above the tree line appeared an upside down triangular shaped object. It was extremely large at least 500 yards across. It had a circular shape at the bottom. It was a silvery greenish color, not extremely bright. It hovered in one spot and then disappeared. There was no beams of light or anything. It was reported to the Bar Harbor Airport. The person who was spoken to, confirmed that there were no aircrafts in the area, that the airport was closed, and there was no weather balloons or such in the area. - NUFORC
Lewiston	2000 August 25	Witnesses reported seeing an object that appeared to be round in shape, with blinking red and green lights. It would move slightly about 5 degrees first to the north, then south, then east and west. Then it moved very slowly downward, as if perhaps it might land somewhere. They could still see it in the sky, but very low. They called the tower at the Portland Jetport to report this unusual sighting. They asked if anything could be observed on radar. The gal told us there was only one plane that could be seen on radar. They also saw this same plane she was referring to. This was NOT the same object they were observing, but another. There was nothing else shown on radar. - NUFORC
Lewiston	2000 April 27	Two witnesses were outside at about 1:00 pm. and saw a very bright, orange ball appear in the sky out of nowhere, probably a few miles away. It hovered there for about a minute when another ball appeared. The two merged and instantly disappeared, going out with a flash of yellow light. - NUFORC
Lewiston	1998 October 20	A witness reported looking up at the stars and seeing many white colored lights among the stars that appeared to be moving from north to south. - NUFORC
Loring AFB	1975 October 27	On 10/27/75 security personnel spotted an unknown aircraft entering the restricted zone around the nuclear weapons storage area. The aircraft was also observed on radar from the tower. Multiple attempts were made to contact the aircraft on all military and civilian communication bands, with no results. The craft came to within 300 yards of the nuclear storage area at an altitude of 150 feet. The base went on major alert status. Tower radar tracked the object as it circled ten miles east-northeast of the base for forty minutes before suddenly disappearing. Ground observers from the 42nd Security Police said it vanished in the direction of Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada. The base remained on high alert all night. On 10/28/75, the next night, the object returned. It was seen to have an amber light and a white flashing light. At one point it appeared 150 feet over the end of a runway, then shut off its lights and re-appeared over the weapons storage area. Here it was seen at close range by a B-52 bomber crew that was working out of a launch truck. They described it as looking like a stretched out red and orange football, about four car lengths long with no doors or windows visible. It vanished when Security Police arrived. On 10/29/75, a National Guard helicopter was enlisted to help. There were representatives of the Canadian military participating as well, so that the chase could cross the Canadian border if necessary. Ground personnel began seeing the object and directing the helicopter by radio. The object was not showing on radar this night, so visual direction was necessary. The helicopter would go to the location directed and turn on its spotlights, but was never able to see anything even though ground personnel would tell them that the object was only 100 feet from them.
Macwahoc	1999 July 27	A report was made of a craft just like the ship that was chased by 2 dozen Ohio cops 5 years ago except narrower than the one on TV, was at least 5 stories high, had 6 lights green and orange, and made no movement and no sound. - NUFORC
Millinocket	1964 May 24	Two witnesses were reported to have been driving along a road and seeing a fiery spherical object without any apparent structure. Upon stopping, they approached the object but then retreated away from it. The object appeared to follow them back to their vehicle. Their car engine would not start while the object was hovering nearby. It then flew away after a few minutes. - Magonia
Millinocket	1953 January 29	A silver, oval UFO flying at 23,000 feet was seen by the crew of an F94 jet. The crew attempted to give chase, but gave up when it appeared useless. Two pilots from a different squadron also saw the object and discussed pursuit, but decided against it. - UFO Encyclopedia, NICAP
Naples	1999 December 7	Witnesses report seeing at least 6 lights in the sky, they did not look like airplanes, they didn't blink, they where pure white, a little bigger than the stars. While heading home they tracked them in the car, and when they got home looked at them again, they were still there, there where also a lot of planes flying around. It look as though they were following the objects, but were not sure. The witness states he studies ufos somewhat, and believes that these were not just planes, or stars. - NUFORC
Norridgewock	2000 March 23	Witnesses report seeing a stationary object in the western horizon. The object was hovering about 700 to1000 feet. At arms length the object was approximately the size of a dime. The object omitted a blinding white light. After 13 minutes the object moved east and past over them. Some structure was seen as a rectangle form, continuing to move east, it disappeared into the horizon as a red dot. - NUFORC
North Waterboro	1997 July 5	A report was made of a gigantic silver colored sphere appearing in the sky over some trees. It suddenly disappeared. - NUFORC
North Yarmouth	1997 January 4	An elderly man was reported to have seen four white disks moving in and out of clouds over nearby Bradbury Mountain. - UFO Roundup
Ogunquit	1998 November 3	A truck driver reported seeing a large green sphere shaped object that became visible through the cloud cover. It passed through the clouds very quickly as it traveled at an approximate 30 degree angle towards the ground. It disappeared behind a hill and did not appear to show any sign that it crashed into the ground. - NUFORC
Phippsburg	1997 January 4	An announcer for station WBLM said four white discs had been sighted over Reid State Park, across the bay near Phippsburg, Maine - UFO Roundup
Pittsfield	1998 March 5	A report was made of a sighting of a large spinning silver colored craft that appeared to have a number of fireball type objects moving around it. - NUFORC
Pittsfield	1954 April 23	A man and woman reported seeing a silver dollar shaped object with a dome and a flashing light that made a sound like a swarm of bees. It hovered and tilted, flew horizontally, then rose vertically without tilting. Stones underneath it moved. The sighting lasted for about four minutes. - Project Bluebook
Portland	2000 October 28	A witness reports lying in bed looking out a 2nd floor window when he noticed a metallic sphere, 3 ft. in diameter, shoot across his field of view. The sun was reflecting off the sphere, and the reflection was very bright. The sphere was about 20 feet above the ground, and 30 feet away from his apartment. It was traveling south. After he noticed the sphere, he ran to the window and got a very good view of it. After a second or two it stopped, reversed direction, then reversed again about a second later, continuing on it's original path. It shot away at an estimated 20 mph. At that point he ran downstairs and outside to see if he could follow it. By that time it was too far away. - NUFORC
Portland	2000 March 9	While looking up to the north at about 45 degrees a witness observed a very bright white light that was about the size of a basketball at arms length. It was not the moon and was sure it was not a balloon. After a short time, 1/2 min. or so it dimmed and it disappeared without a sound - NUFORC
Portland	1999 August 22	Witnesses report looking up at the sky while talking when they saw 3 triangular shape objects flying in the sky and they were glowing sort of an orange color. They were going too fast to be anything they had ever seen and made no sound easily breaking the sound barrier. They were all flying in a v formation. They never slowed down when making these moves: the left one dropped straight down and went forward....the front one out of nowhere shot to the left without slowing down either straight out of its original course and then shot forward again and the other one curved to the left shot up and immediately after that they came back into formation again in a v shape and flew off. - NUFORC
Portland	1998 July 24	A witness reported looking up at the sky and seeing what he thought at first was a star, but then it began to move in a southerly direction. It then began to change direction to the east and then the north while moving at a rapid speed. It appeared to have a reddish color and the witness lost sight of it due to trees in the area. - NUFORC
Portland	1952 September 16	A crew of a U.S. Navy P2V Neptune patrol plane reported a group of five lights that was seen at the same time a long, thin blip was being tracked on radar. Note: consideration was given to this being USAF KC-97 airplanes involved in a refueling operation. The sighting lasted 20 minutes. (What about radio communication?) - Project Bluebook
Rangeley	1954 January 28	A witness reported seeing two bright lights move into a valley and remain visible against the mountain background for approximately 15 minutes - Project Bluebook
Raymond	1999 November 17	Two witnesses were looking out a bus window and saw 2 blackish triangular objects flying toward each other, slowly and with great precision. There was no sound emitting from them at all. - NUFORC
Saco	2000 December 27	A witness reported seeing a very bright light moving very slow. He pulled into a parking lot and watched the triangle shaped craft move over as it was three times the size of any aircraft he'd seen before. It had a huge white light in the front and a large square in the bottom center of it and three smaller squares on each wing with a red light on each wing tip. - NUFORC
Sebago	1976 August 10	A witness reported looking up at the night sky and seeing a star like light move rapidly back and forth across the sky a number of times before disappearing. The sighting lasted for about 10 seconds. - NUFORC
Sidney	2000 November 4	Witnesses report seeing a thing like a giant fireball that dropped little things from it then landed in their back yard. It had hovered about a hundred yards above them and dropped a few things that were small. The main UFO landed in their back field. It went out shortly after it landed. They never found it. That same night the power went out and flickered back on. - NUFORC
Skowhegan	2000 January 15	A husband and wife report seeing an enormous oval shaped object with huge white lights around the perimeter of the craft. Including red and white lights on the bottom of the craft. There was an unusual brilliant red light on top of the craft, it was a blood red color. The craft darted up and down through the trees within seconds then all of a sudden the craft shot up over to the west and disappeared. They state they were both terrified and also state there has been a lot of UFO activity especially in this area for the past 4 years, but this by far, was the closest and scariest encounter they have had. There was no noise from the craft, but the strangest thing of all was when it was darting over the trees, the husband called out "come closer so I can get a good look at you" and it would reportibly come closer! - NUFORC
South Berwick	1999 December 27	Witnesses report seeing an object that appeared to have a white and red light. At first, the thought it was a plane. It is very common to see planes in the sky due to the air traffic between the Portland, and Boston airports. What made this so interesting is this object moved distinctly different than the planes. It appeared to be dancing, or moving in random directions, not fast and not in right angles. It would periodically seem to move quickly up or down, and diagonally, but not far. They were looking toward the northeast. There were other air traffic in the sky, but these were normal airliners from the airports. There were no other objects in the immediate vicinity. They could not determine any features of the object; just the lights. They estimate the object to be approximately 2 - 5 miles away and about 45 degrees up past the horizon. - NUFORC
South China	1999 July 23	Witnesses reported an object that was sighted very close to the setting sun, initially it was thought to be an aircraft off in the distance, as it was thought that it was reflecting the sunlight off the surface of the craft. On later discussion it was decided that this could not be the case because the sun was behind it and therefore could not be reflecting off it. The object which was oval in shape was seen to descend to below ground level, the witnesses were on top of a hill overlooking China Lake, and they later determined that it must have been many miles in the distance as the object was so small. It didn't move at speed or stop and start it's descent, it just gradually descended to below the height they were observing from. There was very little cloud cover over the sky and the day had been very hot, over 100 degrees. - NUFORC
Swanville	1997 June 15	While watching the Hale Bop comet a witness reports looking up and seeing a number of flashing lights that remained visible for almost 5 minutes. No sounds were heard. - NUFORC
Trenton	1989 July 22	Pilots of a Beechcraft plane reported a 2 minute sighting of an oblong shaped ufo. No sound could be heard and there appeared to be a power outage on the ground. - MUFON
Trenton	1967 June 24	Two people sighted a silver-gray, hat-shaped object hovering about 500 feet from the shoreline in Trenton, Maine, around 10 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. It emitted a vapor at its base. The object ascended into a fog bank and descended again at a greater distance before moving away. (Raymond E. Fowler, UFOs Interplanetary Visitors, pg. 349.)
Vassalboro	2000 March 9	A witness reports seeing a bright crescent shape light through curtains; pulled them back to reveal crescent with very bright beacon or headlight hovering over trees in the side yard. There was no discernable shape, no sound, had a milky white aura off to the right. The witness moved to get a camera, then turned back to see it disappear to a pinpoint of light, like a distant star. - NUFORC
Waldoboro	2001 January 10	A witness reports that while driving on route 1 southbound he noticed a bright object in the sky straight ahead and in the sky. He watched the object until he reached his destination. At first he thought it was a meteor but there was no tail involved. He also thought about it being an aircraft yet there was no jet stream coming from it. He got a pair of binoculars to try to get a better view of it but could not tell what it was. It was red like it was on fire and had a cigar shape to it. No blinking lights or anything that made it look like a plane were seen. - NUFORC
Winn	1992 February 23	While driving along a roadway, a witness reported seeing a small reddish colored sphere go back and forth across the road ahead and subsequently increase in size, then change appearance to a reflective silver ball shape, and travel high into the sky. - NUFORC
