Real Name: Conrad Josten
First Appearance: Thunderbolts #47
The name the Smuggler was one of the names used by Atlas (Erik Josten) who is also Conrad's brother and now uses the name. The Josten family has not done well because of Erik choosing the life of crime. Even before that Conrad and Erik's daughter Lindy was run over by a car while on her bike as she tried to follow Erik and his friends because she looked up to him. Erik took on many names in crime such as Goliath, Power Man and once news of this got back to his hometown the Josten family was disgraced. No one would do business with them and their farm went bankrupt. After that Erik and Conrad's parents died. Conrad ran away and supposedly changed his name and Carl their other brother became a drunk.
He had tried to run away from everything that had happened but the Thunderbolts making headlines only reminded Conrad of his brother, and how Erik ruined everything. Conrad is now bitter and inexperienced and became the Smuggler in the Redeemers.
Conrad's final battle was in Thunderbolts #56 when the Redeemers fought Graviton. Conrad attacked Graviton from the inside. Graviton seeking to stop the pain that Conrad was inflicting, Graviton headed for the sun. Interrupting Conrad's access to the dark force dimension Graviton forced him outward. Conrad had nowhere left to go as he was exposed to the sun and his form was torn apart finding no shadows.
With his suit he uses the dark force dimension. He can open dark force folds and disappear into them and reappear elsewhere through another opening wherever there is a point of shadow. His suit allows him to do many other things with the dark force dimension as well.
