I've loved folk music ever since I
can remember, from the first songs my father sang that he'd learned in
the Ozarks from his grandmother to ballads like The Highwayman read
in textbooks to poetry in literature like Tolkein and other fantasy.
When I was 13, I read James
A. Michener's
The Drifters. For any of you who haven't
read it, it deals with several characters trying to find themselves in
the sixties. One of the characters is a folk-singer. It is
from Michener that I first heard about Child Ballads. After that
I scoured libraries, bookstores and music stores for even more folk music,
particularly any un-Americanized version of the Childs. Interspersed
with rock and metal and classical and country always were Joan
Baez, Pete Seeger, Steeleye
Span, Pentangle
and other folk artists. My musical tastes led me to explore fantasy
fiction further, and from there, in 1978/79, I read a book called Quag
Keep by Andre Norton. I was amazed that the "game" she based
her book on was an actual real game that people could--and were--playing.
I hunted throughout my hometown until I discovered the local gaming store
(how on earth had I ever missed that?). I entered my name
into their "Gamers seeking Gamers" book and the rest is history (well,
my history at any rate).
Gaming led me to the Society for Creative Anachronism where I could feed my passion for folk music, fantasy and frivolity all in one place. The SCA encouraged me to further my research into folk music and, hence, bards. I've formed some pretty odd ideas about bards, or what a bard should be. I feed my creative urges through art, music and writing. In addition to the short stories found on this page, I am in the midst of writing Siobhann's tale, The Missing Chord. |
I prithee, an thou hast enjoyed
rest
and merriment whilst pausing at the Gallery, scribe thy thoughts
