Smithfield Fair

Good Scottish music from Baton Rouge

Celtic music isn't just Irish, and it isn't found only in the seven Celtic nations. Considering that I've found a Scottish Celtic band in Israel, why not Louisiana? This was a trio which has been together now for over 16 years. It's now a quartet - here's their press release:

After 18 years, Smithfield Fair has become recognized as one of the foremost presenters of traditionally-based Scottish music in North America – playing selectively the cream of Scottish events – and their original songs have contributed to the rich heritage of songwriting in both North American and Scotland. 2006 sees the release of the group’s tenth album – the all-original Walking Through This World, working with percussionist/co-producer Merel Bregante of Loggins & Messina/Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame and long-time co-producer/guitarist David Praet. In 2005, the quartet released Swept Away, a critically-acclaimed album showcasing Smithfield Fair’s merging of Scottish traditional songs in contemporary settings and featuring Scottish fiddle great John Taylor. Their music was also used prominently in the film, “Law of the Six-gun”. Smithfield Fair has shared stages with a ‘who’s who’ of Celtic and acoustic music luminaries such as John Taylor, Alasdair Fraser, Alex Beaton, Brian McNeill, Eileen Ivers, the Tannahill Weavers, John Prine, Arlo Guthrie and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Smithfield Fair has made numerous appearances on television across North America and the group’s music continues to receive world-wide radio airplay, being featured on a number of prominent internet radio channels.

I'm carrying all of their albums, which include:

  1. Scotland Owns Me
  2. Scattered Seeds of Scotland

Smithfield Faire is made up of Jan Smith on accordion, guitar, piano, percussion and recorders, Dudley-Brian Smith on vocals, guitar, mandolin, Scottish smallpipes(!), tin whistle, Great Highland bagpipes and recorders, and Frang Bladen (aka Frang the Pounder) on bodhran, percussion and vocals. However, for "Walking Through This World," they've added a new member to the band, one Bob Smith.

Each of the CDs is $15.00, and all are in stock right now. If you like good Scottish Celtic music, historical Scottish Celtic music, Robert Burns put to music, you've gotta try this group!
