WhirlyGig

A Celtic Band from Dublin, Ireland

This is a picture of Liam, Declan and Eugene in a new persona.

At the 2000 Atlanta Celtic Festival, there were several people who told me I should listen to this band, as they were good. What I didn't know at the time was that they are great! The band members hail from Ireland, do the Celtic tradition and do it well. My problem is I'm extremely jealous of the guitar player, a young man named Tony, who would make Duane Elms or Heather Alexander jealous. He's only been playing for three years, but I tell you, I've never seen nor heard anyone play the guitar like he does.

The members of the band are:

  1. Liam "the Pony" Donohoe, the band's leader and guitar player;
  2. Patrick "the Monkey" Lawless on guitar;
  3. Declan "the Badger" Quinn on tin whistles, low D and G whistles; and
  4. Eugene "Egg" Quinn, Declan's brother, on banjo.

The aforementioned Tony "filled in" on this trip for Patrick, and Brian Fleming (a special guest on the group's first album) did the bodhran, the djembe, the bones, a musical banana, a musical egg, and has got to be one of the best bodhran players I've ever seen/heard. He also works with another type of percussion instrument I've never seen, and am not sure I could accurately describe, so when I get the information on it, I'll post it. It also turns out that he was involved with building the world's largest drum, a combination bodhran/lambeg, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Right now the group has two albums out. The playlist for the first one, called "WhirlyGig," is as follows:

  1. The Night Rider Set
  2. The Way Young Lovers Do
  3. The Butterfly
  4. Milk Kilkenny
  5. The Energy Drink Set
  6. The Foxhunter Set
  7. Raglan Road
  8. Deccie's Sleepless Nights
  9. The Best Lookin' Blokes Set
  10. The Banks of Red Roses

The Way Young Lovers Do is a Van Morrison song. Raglan Road is by Patrick Kavanagh. These two songs are used by permission from the original record companies; this is indicated in the album jacket.

The cost is $16.00. More than well worth it.

The second album is called "In Bed with WhirlyGig." It also costs $16.00. Read the review page and you'll see why I think it's worth it.
