Born: 2335, on a planet near the Cardassian border.

He is a decendent of the ancient Rubber Tree People.
He couldn't accept his people's way of life and decided to leave for Starfleet Academy in 2350.
During his career in Starfleet, Chakotay got to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
When his home planet was turned over to the Cardassians in the peace treaty in 2370, he resigned from Starfleet and joined the Maquis, where he remained until he was brought into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker in 2371.
He is now having to adapt to life in Starfleet again, and currently holds the rank of Commander. He is serving under Janeway on the USS Voyager.
