The Emergency Medical Holographic Program is designed as a temporary suppliment to the
regular medical staff in the event that they are overloaded or incapacitated. It was not intended for continuous, long term usage.
The EMH program was developed on Jupiter Station under the direction of Dr.
Lewis Zimmerman. Dr. Zimmerman is who the doctor's image is modeled after.
Lt. Reginald Barclay also assisted with the Doctor's programming.
The Doctor's database contains information from over 2000 medical reference sources, and he has the experience of 47
medical officers. It consists of more than 50 million igaquads of computer data and he is equipped with the medical knowledge from more than 3,000 cultures.
The Doctors program is adaptive, allowing new modules to be added.
Being a hologram, the Doctor cannot go anywhere without holo-emmitters, this did confine him to the sickbay and the holodeck, however, this problem has been solved with a portable holo-emmiter which he wears on his arm.
The Doctor went on his first mission on Stardate 48693 when he was needed to rescue Harry Kim from the holodeck during his simulation of Beowulf.
The Doctor has fallen in love with a Vidiian, whom he had treated.
He has recently created a family, so that he could experience family life. They turned out like the brady Bunch.
The Doctor was first seen in the "Caretaker".
