Log Five

At the beginning of the session, Jess is languishing in a dungeon somewhere below the castle, and Hazard is trying to work out how to rescue her. Fiona is currying favour with the new king, Corwin, by blocking Jessica's Trump.

Quotes from the session:
"So, if my dad isn't my dad, but my mother's nephew, which I knew anyhow, except the bit about him not being my dad, then that makes me a direct line descendant of Corwin, Merlin, and Benedict. So, to recap, dad thinks he's my dad, but he isn't. Nobody knows your dad isn't your dad, and thus I am the product of three - no, four, different bloodlines, all of which are headed by my grandfather, who is also my great grandfather, and also Benedict's father. Mother, I am beginning to understand why most Amberites believe there is someone out there, and he is laughing at us. I need a drink." Hazard, thinking about her somewhat incestuous relatives, and in particular, Oberon.

"Well, I'm back," Finndo
"And for once Jessie hasn't arsed up in spectacular fashion. Something's wrong." Gerard

"A handbag? You found them in a handbag?" Benedict, on hearing where Hazard supposedly got her dragon-kittens.
"Well, at least now you know I am in Ernest." Hazard, retro-quoting (See Session Seven)

Hazard went and asked her mother if her guesses about Merlin Sawall being her father were right, and they were. She thought for a while, then using her mother's card of Merlin, Trumped to see him. Merlin, while he could do nothing for her, being a minor player in a major house, was pleased to see her, and they discussed various plans to get Jess out of gaol, while Melrin put into action various trusts and started the process of having her adopted. They agreed never to tell Rinaldo, on the grounds he loved his daughter. Problem was, Fiona and Brand were keeping their respective eyes on her trump card, which was wired up to all sorts of nasties. A gaolbreak of that kind was out of the question. Nobody who knew their way around the caverns underneath Kolvir and Amber would be willing, even if able, to help them, and Hazard was held by a vow to do whatever she could for her friend.
Notwithstanding the terrible dangers inherent in such a course, she trumped back to Amber from Chaos and asked Corwin straight out what it would take to procure her release. Corwin, who was expecting a quiet word from Caine shortly, because of Jess being his daughter, said that as long as Jess kept away from Amber for a while, she was free to go. Hazard went down to the cells, only to find voices in the cell, talking! She listened for a while, as was her habit.
Dworkin! Dworkin was back. And he was talking to Jessica about his favourite grandson Finndo. In fact, he had drawn a picture of him so that she could see him.
Chuckling at the old man's habit of slipping into and out of tight spots, Hazard wandered away, and returned the next day, to let out Jessica, who had passed an uncomfortable time in the cells.
Hazard took Jessica out into Shadow and left her there for a while to cool down, heading back to Benedict's mansion, the Portfolio, to have a talk with her newly discoved great great grandfather, or whatever he was. She was never sure how many generations separated them. Nobody, even her, is that good at Maths, or can find out how well Daraa was lying.
Jess was puzzled by Dworkin's ability to disappear through the paintings he had made, until she realised that they were full-sized Trump Cards. She went back down to her cell, and concentrated on the one through which he had departed.
So Jess got herself teleported to Dworkin's cave, and had a nice talk with her Grandad, who told her who she was, and his relation to her. He told her how the Pattern was linked to him, he being the Pattern in a very real sense. And then he showed her the Pattern.

"It was big and blue and sparkly and more real than the other one," said Jessica later. She never was too good with words.
Jessica returned to Amber to find out that a few months had passed, there had been yet another coup, and that nobody was on the throne.
Clever girl, with only the smallest of hints from a dream sent by Dworkin, she went down to the cell where she had seen him do the drawing of Finndo. She contacted him, and got a picture of him in his room. At that point, he still thought he was a monk. To cut a long story and a bit of violence short, she brought him back, made him walk the Pattern to restore his memories, and he somehow got onto the throne. It is possible that Hazard had something to do with this. The Coronation was a good thing, as he was basically a decent guy, and Oberon and Dworkin had put him there specifically so that there would be a spare King around in the future.

At this point, certain people in the family decided that Jessica was not in it just for kicks, but had some ulterior motive. So Gerard, never to sure what he is thinking, wrestled with her, just to prove a point, and she promised to be good.

Fiona, sure that Jessica was in fact far more intelligent than she was making out, drew a special Trump Card of her, that would alert her if Jessica started talking to any of the enemies of the family.
Gerard was satisfied that Jessica was weak enough to defeat. Flora just had a wolfhound trail Jess for a while until dear little Hazard killed it in a hunting "accident" in Arden, because she was the only one allowed to keep tabs on Jess..

At the end of the session, Jessica and Hazard were in Amber, Deidre was looking increasingly likely to recognise her son, William, and Brand had just appeared on the scene, trailing a red-headed boy with sulky eyes mostly obscured by a floppy fringe. His name was Eagle, and he muttered to himself constantly, and had a nervous twitch in his right cheek.
