Log Thirteen

At the beginning of the session, William and Brion, son of Gerard, were in Chaos, planning a break-in of House Helmawr, to find how William could survive the Abyss. Jessica was being rather scared in Benedict's Shadow, where she was being kept for her own safety, under suspicion of having something to do with the disappearence of two relatives. Moradin, younger brother of Hazard, and Julian had both disappeared, leaving behind the same sort of burn marks as had failed to capture Benedict.

Quotes from the session:
"So wea arre heeding tao sertain deith. So whot? Wea maye survvivve." Brion, an optimist
"So we are going to die. That is what." William, a realist

"Hey, if Ygg gave me a staff, does that mean I could use that as a Karmic Anchor?" William
"A Wizzzaaard's staff has a knob on the end..." Tuverlf, Clown to the Emperor.

"I'm not afraid of you, Benedict. Don't think you can push me around." William "Deathwish" Barriman

"There is a reason you should be afraid of him, William. He is the one who did that to Crowley, and neither has ever stopped hating the other." Fiona
"Ohshit." William "I should not have been so damned rude" Barriman

"Does he do tricks, yer bum-chum?"Moradin to William, of Brion. (It should be mentioned at this point that Moradin was born able to swear, and thinks nothing of any perversions, so he was actually being friendly to Brion.)

APOLOGY COUNT
1, William brown-nosing to Crowley

William completed the break-in, but nearly got caught, and was trumped halfway through by - wait for it - Brand. Brand was floating in the Abyss and seemed rather tired and ill, but William refused to speak to him.
On finally getting out of there, he found all he had was an ingredients list for a sort of astral bungee cord. The list took him through Shadow, followed by Brion, to find all the stuff they needed. On the way, he found a friend who would follow him through thick and thin, and even offered to go into the Abyss in his stead. He was an Elf, by the name of Legolas. (As is my style, I try to get in as many quotes and names as possible into a Session, and this one name opened up all the realms of Tolkien) He visited Ygg again, for old times' sake, and Ygg gave him a staff, and gave Brion an acorn. When they finally got back to Chaos, he was Trumped again, by Brand. Brand, who had almost destroyed the entire family and brought the Pattern crashing down, asked for help. William refused, and then he felt a a tremendous malevolence regarding him, and Brand screamed in panic. He pulled his uncle through, and Brand collapsed in a sobbing heap on the floor.
William went out to the edge of the Abyss, clutching a staff given to him by Ygg, and found Benedict standing there with Fiona, Mandor and Dara in the background, glowering. The elder Amberites were discussing what to do, and Benedict was glad to let William jump down into the Abyss, rather than going himself. He jumped, he fell, he floated, and he landed on what seemed to be a rough copy of Amber Palace, made of solid fire. He walked in, and entered the throne room after wandering around for a while. On the throne, a man was sitting. The man, who looked around sixty, was wearing half a mask, on the right side of his face, and a glove on his right hand. When William asked who he was, the flat tone of voice sent shivers up and down his spine.
"I am Crowley. You are in my domain." "Um, sorry." "You will be." The conversation continued like this, with William getting more and more scared, until Crowley asked what he wanted. When William asked about the assassination attempts, Crowley told him to blame them on Brand's attempts to take control of the Abyss. And by the way, was William the one who had aided Brand? Yes? In that case he was going to die in eternal torment. Oh yes, and he liked his uncle Julian, too. Well, would he like to see Julian?
Moradin and Julian appeared, covered with a very thin layer of red fire, and looking both agonised and well and truly bound and gagged. William asked if it was Brand that had killed Hazard, and Crowley started acting very strangely. His mad personality, who had liked Hazard, took over. He pulled off the half mask, to reveal that there was no skin underneath - someone or something had flayed the right side of his body. A voice completely unlike the menacing tone he had had before told William to escape while he still could, and take the prisoners with him. William did, and as he clambered out of the Abyss, a good few miles from where he had dived in, the darkness and emptiness behind him exploded, and Crowley's laughter could be heard within. A glove drifted down out of the sky, where it had been blown by the winds, with a thank-you note for releasing him, and a request that he should keep the glove by him, so that Crowley would be reminded of his gratitude.
William walked back to where he had jumped in, and found that Suhuy, Merlin, Dara, and just about every mage in Chaos was there. None of them were getting too close to Benedict, as they knew him from Patternfall. Merlin dismissed them all so that the Amberites, including the rescued prisoners, could speak in private. Benedict read the note on the glove, and started working up for a bollocking for William. Fiona looked grim as well. When Benedict started explaining, patiently and in words of one syllable, what William had just done by coming up a different route, William was extremely rude to him, saying that what he had seen in the Abyss was scarey. Benedict was not. For a few seconds his life hung in the balance without him realising it, but Fiona managed to persuade Benedict not to kill him, on the grounds he didn't know the whole story. Instead, Benedict turned and walked away, shifting as he went, and disappeared from the scene for a while.
Fiona, Moradin and Julian were pretty aghast at the way that William had spoken to Benedict, and Fiona told him that Crowley and Benedict had been fighting longer than any of them had been alive, and the reason Crowley was disfigured was Benedict. Moradin refused for a while to say anything to William, whom he still considered guilty of his sister's death. Julian departed as soon as he could, taken by a friendly demon back to Arden, and Fiona teleported away.
Moradin asked about whether Brion was William's boyfriend, and then asked if he could watch William trying to apologise to Benedict, if he helped him find him. William, feeling he had gone rather over the top, said yes, and they wandered off into Shadow, with Moradin in the lead. Moradin at this point was plotting his revenge on William, and wanted to keep him alive and as near as possible.

At the end of the session, Jessica was still hanging around in the Portfolio, Benedict's mansion, William, Brion and Moradin were searching Shadow for Benedict, who was not taking Trump calls. Crowley had escaped from the Abyss, ending the first phase of the campaign with relatively little blood.
