Millennium: 'Borrowed Time'

People who have survived life-threatening situations start to die, and when Jordan suddenly shows all the symptoms of meningitis without the disease, it looks like she will be next...

These days Millennium seems short of ideas beyond the murderers approach of Season One. Luckily, there are still stories like this, in which Frank has a personal investment that show just how good the series can be when given a chance.

After the loss of Catherine, Frank is even more determined to keep Jordan, and the thought that he might lose the last thing on Earth he cares about is clearly more than he can cope with. Lance Henriksen gives one of his most powerful performances, revealing a distraught Frank who prays to God not to take his daughter from him.

The idea itself is fascinating: someone who hands out extra time on Earth, then takes it back when the gift is needed by someone else. The motives of the man shown here are kept 'need to know', as we watch a fated train journey. We know something is going to happen, but the result of the man's actions are a total surprise. Although we never discover exactly what is going on, the end of the episode is also strangely satisfying, as it should be when dealing with concepts beyond the understanding of mere humans. Powerfully moving, and well worth a look.
