Millennium: 'Darwin's Eye'

A young woman who has been living in an asylum since she apparently killed her parents escapes, and the FBI try to track her down before she kills again.

Now, Millennium is well known now for its prophecy stories, and events that don't become totally clear to the viewer, but this episode takes the biscuit. The tension throughout is well handled, as the viewers try to work out whether Cass is a killer or not, but the end result explains nothing and doesn't really leave anyone any the wiser. It does say who was behind the killings, but not why, and it tells us nothing about Cass.

Alongside this is the first appearance of Emma's father, who is going slowly mad. This is clearly an attempt to draw comparisons between his brand of madness and Cass's, but it never quite comes off. There's no sense of closure in this plot strand either. Hollis's father says he will tell her about the palms. This never happens. What were they and what did they signify? What is the link between these and Cass? At the end of it all, you actually know less than when the episode began. It's all very well being mysterious, but not when you obscure anything resembling an explanation.

There are a couple of good aspects. Emma's desire to find a conspiracy is interesting, as Frank makes her realize that sometimes there is no pattern and not everyone does things because of the approaching millennium. Also, Baldwin is portrayed in a slightly better light than recently, and comes across as a much more competent agent. But these elements can in no way hold together a horrendous mish-mash of a story.
