Millennium: 'Via Dolorosa (1 of 2)'

Frank witnesses an execution for the first time, but when a killer appears to be using the same methods as the dead man, Frank must stop a copycat.

I was a little confused at the start of this story, as recent events didn't appear to tie into the last few episodes, but then the episode back-tracks a little to explain things. In Millennium's penultimate episode, several plot threads are set up and others continued, no doubt leading to an explosive season ender.

Hollis's relationship with her father is tragically drawn here, making their scenes much more poignant than a few episodes ago as he progresses further into his Alzheimer's Disease, even threatening Emma with a gun not knowing who she is. The intriguing twist is that Peter Watts offers the agent a chance for help, as the Millennium Group apparently have techniques that can aid her father. But how high will the price be?

The killer himself is a particularly unpleasant one, compulsively tidy, unhinged and believing himself to be suffering like Christ, an idea that expertly marries the show's serial killer and spiritual themes. The Polaroid pictures that Frank is still getting puzzle, however. How many picture-takers are there out there?

It's also good to see Baldwin coming out of the shadows, and proving that he's not out to make trouble and is a pretty good agent. Pairing him with Frank for much of the episode works well, and his ill-fated raid is truly shocking. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one ends.
