Heading to New York to meet with an old friend, Cade discovers an illegal escort service that is providing partners with added worm...
Yes, the mind-controlling worm is back! Only these ones just suck in memories to impart to a husk body, thereby allowing the aliens to replace important people, taking First Wave more into Invasion of the Body Snatchers territory than it has been so far.
There are at least some more interesting characters involved in this story, but many opportunities to develop them are missed. Susan is worth more exploration, and it would have been good to see more of the aliens running the pick-up club alongside Joshua, who turns up a few minutes before the end to close down the operation. Even War of the Worlds allowed us more of a look into the alien mind than this.
Each plot development is also dealt with in minutes. Cade gets a worm in his head, then through the luck that a lawyer's drinking of a rare tequila caused a worm to leave him, Cade manages to rid himself of his own passenger. There is little exploration of Susan's past relationship with Cade, and there seems to be no point in the presence of the hack pursuing Susan except to kill him near the end of the story.
That said, the story moves along at a reasonable pace; it's just very simplistic. Not really one of the more exciting entries in the series.
