First Wave: 'Undesirables'

Joshua is sent to assassinate one of his fellow Gua, Anita, who has fallen in love with a scientist and now poses a risk to the aliens' security, but Cade is determined to avert the woman's death.

This could have become terribly sickly-sweet, but despite early indications (a letter that ends 'PS Is this a love letter?), there is no long and tedious examination of love, between aliens or otherwise. What is here is a battle of wits and wills between Cade and Joshua, who both find themselves on opposite sides, but being played by Anita herself.

It's good to see an episode from the alien perspective for a change, and Roger R Cross as Joshua finally gets some screen time. His attempts to convince his peers that he hasn't 'gone human' on them are clever, with all their criticisms played back on them. However, for an assassin, shooting someone in the leg when you've got a clear shot is pretty poor and something of a giveaway, even if your quarry's boat blows up shortly afterwards.

The relationship between Cade and Joshua is building nicely, and Anita's final comment that they should work together is an intriguing one. Perhaps the two can make a difference. There are also some interesting points about wormholes and white holes here, which can hopefully be followed up later on. A surprising success.
