First Wave: The Apostles

A biker gang has set up a camp on the outskirts of a camp where an alien operation is underway, and having read Cade's writings have decided to take matters into their own hands. But where will their witchhunt end?

Once again First Wave takes a step further along the path to individuality as Cade finally discovers a group of people who have been reading his work and want to help. Unfortunately, rather than testing those they accuse of being Gua infiltrators, their method is to kill first and hope their prey dissolves. It's something of a shame that once you see them take out their first alien you're just waiting for them to inadvertantly kill a real human, and the whole episode continues in the same predictable vein until the end.

This ending, however, is not what we've come to expect from First Wave, where it's invariably the case of Cade kills the nasty aliens, destroys their experiment and leaves, having picked up some follows on the way. In this case, most of the followers wind up dead, two innocents are killed, and the main Gua present manages to escape. After such an obvious 35 minutes, it's good to see something a bit more imaginative and surprising occur in the last ten.

Cliché as it may be, the biker gang are there due to being a traditionally untrustworthy group of people, and less likely to be believed when they talk about aliens than, say, a Christian church full of people trying to wipe out the invaders, which is a shame. And then there's the reason for the Gua presence, which appears to be to get quartz crystals so they can run Windows 95. With their technology already so advanced, it seems odd that they need to improve their communications devices, and not much is made of this anyway. However, beneath the simplistic plotting there's a pretty good and interesting story lurking here.
