ABC (17/04/01 22:01:36) Indonesia bans Maluku separatist movement Indonesian authorities have outlawed a mainly-Christian secessionist movement in the troubled Maluku islands. The group, known as the Maluku Sovereignty Front, is campaigning for independence for the southern part of the archipelago. The Jakarta Post newspaper says Maluku governor Saleh Latuconsina banned the group yesterday, saying it threatened to further destabilise the region. Thousands of people have died in fighting between Christian and Muslim communities since sectarian violence erupted in the region in early 1999.
