The Courier-Mail 07/04/01 INDONESIA offered an olive branch to outraged Australian veterans yesterday by suggesting it
might restore a war graves monument destroyed by Muslims in troubled Ambon. "If it is true, the Indonesian Government will be ready to restore the cemetery, but I don't believe it was done by the Muslim community," said Sulaiman Abdulmanan, director of information at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry. He put the action down to "stupid individual Muslims". The cross overlooked the graves of more than 2000 servicemen, mostly Australian, who died at the hands of the Japanese in Ambon during World War II.
