Jakarta Post 02 May, 2001 JAKARTA (JP): Maluku Police will soon submit the dossier on Alex Manuputty, a leader of the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) who has been accused of treason, to the Maluku Prosecutor's Office, an officer said on Tuesday. Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Firman Gani said on Tuesday that the dossier would be ready within four days. "We hope that this way the legal proceedings can continue," Firman said as quoted by Antara. Maluku Police detained Alex on Monday, following the recent hoisting of the separatist flag and alleged treason in the restive province. FKM secretary-general Hengky Manuhutu confirmed that Alex had been detained by the police on Monday after being questioned for about five hours from 10 a.m. local time at the Maluku Police Headquarters. "Alex is being detained for a period of 20 days, starting Monday, pending a court hearing," Hengky told The Jakarta Post by phone later on Monday. A person accused of treason is charged under articles 154 and 155 of the Criminal Code which address the displaying of hostile intentions toward the state/treason and for expressing hostility against the government. The articles carry a maximum penalty of seven years and 4.5 years in prison, respectively. Earlier, Firman Gani urged people to stay calm and let the authorities handle the separatist movement in accordance with prevailing regulations. "We urge people from both the Muslim and Christian camps not to get emotional over this separatist issue," Firman said. This was the first official comment from the police on the separatist movement following a separatist flag-hoisting ceremony on April 25. The 10-minute flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the house of Alex Manuputty in the Kudamati area of Nusaniwe district at about 7 a.m., but the flag was shortly pulled down by the police. The separatist flag was hoisted alongside a United Nations flag and the red-and-white Indonesian flag. On the handling of underground radio stations that have allegedly spread provocative messages, Firman said that the civil emergency administrator was taking precautions so as not to trigger further unrest. "One thing is for sure, we will be very careful in handling the FKM separatist case and the Lasykar Jihad. We have agreed on taking certain measures so that renewed rioting will not be triggered," he said. Separately, Pattimura Military Commander Brig. Gen. I Made Yasa was quoted by the news agency as saying on Tuesday that the officials had taken measures in the case of an overnight arson attack on a fuel truck in Wailela of Baguala district in Ambon. "We urge people not to easily resort to violence," Yasa said. The arson attack took place at around 3:30 p.m. local time Monday by a mob. No casualties were reported. (49/edt)
