Diarrhea, malaria sweep through refugee camps in N. Maluku Jakarta Post, April 1, 2001 JAKARTA (JP): Diarrhea and malaria are raging in at least two refugee camps in riot-torn North Maluku province, Antara news agency reported on Saturday. In a refugee camp in Jambula village, Ternate subdistrict, two adults have died of diarrhea and 47 children are in critical condition due to diarrhea and malaria. The diseases are also reportedly prevalent in another refugee camp in Dorosagu village, Maba subdistrict, Halmahera island. The news agency reported that a joint medical team of local military and police had been deployed to treat the victims. Most of the refugees are from Malifut subdistrict in Halmahera island, which was hit by communal conflicts last year. Now there are around 1,000 Malifut refugees living in the Jambula refugee camp. About 14,000 others have been returned to their homeland in Halmahera. Head of the provincial health office Nurdin Perdan, was not available for confirmation on the diarrhea and malaria cases.
