Jakarta Post (5/13/2001 4:54:10 PM) AMBON, Maluku (JP): A violent attack took place in the waters off Ambon on Sunday when gunmen sprayed bullets at the speedboat Teluk Ambon at about 2:30 p.m., killing three people and injuring two others. The three fatalities were identified as the speedboat driver Selvianus Kaya, 25, and passengers Poli Manuputty, 61, and Magdalena Manuputty, 65, a local journalist quoted staff at the Haulussy General Hospital as saying. The speedboat was carrying about 25 passengers, according to W. Makue, a survivor of the attack. Both Makue and another passenger, Ongen Manuputty, survived the incident with gunshot wounds. The vessel was on its way from Benteng Port in Nusaniwe district to Galala village in Sirimau district when the assailants, riding on another speedboat, opened fire at them in the waters off Rumah Tiga. The attackers came from the direction of Rumah Tiga beach, the witnesses said. The Teluk Ambon was able to reach Hative Besar Port and the victims were evacuated to Benteng and rushed to Dr. Haulussy General Hospital in Kuda Mati in Ambon. Following the incident, the marines deployed troops on speedboats to escort passenger ships passing through the waters off Ambon. This was the first major incident following weeks of calm in restive Maluku. Over two years of bloody violence in both Maluku and North Maluku provinces have claimed some 8,000 lives and driven more than 230,000 people from the islands. (49/edt)
