Explosions rock Ambon Jakarta Post March 18, 2001 - After weeks of calm, gunfire and explosions rocked Ambon on Sunday as three explosions took place near the Wijaya II hotel in the restive border area of Batu Merah - Mardika at around 5 p.m. local time. Local residents said that the bombs were aimed at two security posts in the area, which are guarded respectively by personnel from the Joint Battalion and the East Java 521/Brawijaya unit. "The shots and three bomb explosions were aimed at security posts at Hotel Wijaya II and one near the Union building," chief of Ambon Sector/I Col. Ngakan Gede Sugiartha told The Jakarta Post by phone from Ambon. The troops on guard fired warning shots towards the source of the noise. Later it turned out that it was sparked off by an officer celebrating his wedding in the Batu Merah area, he said. "A police officer, identified as Mosad, celebrated his wedding by blasting three bombs and fired shots ... and the shots were aimed at the security posts," Sugiartha said. Upon hearing the explosions, crowds of local residents from both the predominantly-Muslim area of Batu Merah and the Christian Mardika area gathered, but dispersed peacefully later in the day. Several cars had their windows broken as they were also hit by bullets. Reports also said that two personnel suffered minor injuries caused by bomb shrapnel. A huge explosion also took place at midnight on Saturday in Jl. Pohon Pule, causing panic among residents. Received via email from: Masariku@yahoogroups.com |
