Three killed in fresh riot in C. Maluku Jakarta Post February 21, 2001 - Three people were killed and another was injured during an attack on Wednesday morning on Allang Asaude village in Piru district, Seram Island, Central Maluku. The attackers came from Haununu and Waisala villages while others came outside the island on a speed boat, Antara reported. The attackers threw homemade bombs and fired their guns at the houses, then surrounded the village, causing its inhabitants to flee, except for the men who tried to fight back. Nearly all of the houses there were reduced to ashes in the attack that onlyleft eight houses intact. A spokesman for the Maluku civil emergency command post, John Tomasoa, said the 731st Infantry Battalion in charge of security in the area was outnumbered and failed to prevent the attack. The situation was under control only after additional troops were sent in, he said. Hundreds of Allang Asaude villagers are now taking refuge in nearby Piru village. This was the third attack on the village in the past two years, said Tomasoa.
