Wiranto probed over lawsuit on Maluku riots Indonesian Observer Thursday, February 01 - 2001-Police yesterday question former armed forces commander retired General Wiranto over allegations that he was among a group of senior military figures responsible for the long-running religious riots in Maluku and North Maluku. Wiranto on November 24 filed a lawsuit against claims that he had conspired with Lieutenant General Djadja Suparman and Major General Suaidy Marasabessy to instigate and prolong the sectarian clashes in the spice islands. Djadja is former chief of the Army's Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad), while Suady Marasabessy is former chief of the Maluku Military Command. Accusations of the military's alleged involvement in the unrest have been made by several academics and the press. But Wiranto is only suing two parties: Thamrin Amal Tomagola, a lecturer in sociology at the University of Indonesia, and the Siwa Lima daily newspaper. Wiranto, who served as military commander under former presidents Soeharto and B.J. Habibie, arrived at National Police headquarters in a maroon Mitsubishi Chariot van. He was accompanied by an adjutant and three members of the military's legal team: Lieutenant Colonel Suchamir, Lieutenant Colonel Manalu and Captain Subagyo Santoso. Suchamir said the main purpose of his client's visit was to sign the dossiers in the defamation lawsuit against Tomagola and the Siwa Lima daily. But National Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Timbul Sianturi said Wiranto was asked about the claims that he was responsible for the Maluku carnage. "Today Mr Wiranto was quizzed as a witness in relation to his lawsuit. Actually, he was summoned late last year, but due to his tight business schedule, he did not have time to fulfill the summons until today," said Sianturi. Tomagola made the accusations against the senior military figures on radio and television talkshows last year. He said Wiranto, Djadja and Suady had incited the Muslim-Christian clashes that have now claimed more than 5,000 lives. The Siwa Lima newspaper had published articles on Wiranto's alleged role in the violence. Sianturi said police dealing with the lawsuit have already questioned Djadja and Suady. He said police will soon summon Tomagola for questioning. Also due to be summoned is television comedian Tubagus Dedi Gumelar alias Miing, who moderated the talkshow on which Tomagola made his accusations. Bomb blasts Abdul Qadir Jaelani, a legislator from the Crescent Star Party, recently said Kadi was behind a series of bombings. Kadi is widely regarded as a pro-reform military figure and was close to former Kostrad commander Major General Agus Wirahadikusumah. Both generals now have desk positions at military headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.
