Operation Sweep continued in North Maluku

Indonesian Observer Monday, April 9 - 2001

Military personnel and local police under the Security Recovery Group, continued sweeping ID cards to ensure all those entering and exiting North Maluku carry the appropriate ID-cards and have appropriate purposes to visit the region.

Antara reported from Ternate yesterday that all passengers who board, or disembark liners operated by state-owned PT Pelni, had to show their identity cards to local police and military, or they would be sent back the place from where they came.

The sweep is also intended to prevent the entry of drugs, bombs or sharp-pointed tools that would feed sectarian violence in the region. The liners serving the Maluku-Surabaya-Jakarta route are KM Lambelu, KM Ciremai, and KM Umsini.

Two weeks ago the police were forced to send back around 80 passengers of KM Lambelu after they failed to show ID cards.

North Maluku Governor, Muhyi Effendi said that the sweeping of ID cards was intended to prevent possible masterminds from triggering riots at the region. “I know there are a few groups of people in society who do not like to see any establishment of peace in the region.”

He added that for a period of time in the future, the region will remain closed for people from other Indonesian provinces and other countries, unless they come with special duties to alleviate the social problems of locals at the region.

“Recently certain noted figures from Jakarta offered their help in restoring the situation in North Maluku, but I informed them that the local people must be allowed to solve their own problems,” he said.

Weeks ago the police have found bombs and sharp-pointed tools carried by passengers of liners operated by the state-owned company PT Pelni.

Since then, the governor and local police were highly alert to control the region by launching operation to continue sweeping identity cards of persons coming to the newly established province in the northern part of Maluku.
