Maluku separatist group seeks to raise flag
Indonesian Observer Tuesday, April 24 - 2001
AMBON (IO) – The Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM), a group struggling for
Maluku’s independence, currently is seeking a permit from the Indonesian
government to raise the flag of the separatist South Maluku Republic (RMS)
on April 25.
FKM leader Alex Manuputty said that the flag-raising ceremony is designed
to commemorate South Maluku independence which was originally proclaimed
on April 25, 1950 by Dr. Soumokil.
“We have sent a request to the Indonesian President and the United
Nations. But we are yet to receive an answer,” Manuputty said at his
residence in Kudamati, Ambon, recently.
He assumed that no word from the Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid on
this issue indicates that the president has most likely given tacit
approval.
“But what is ridiculous is that our plan was rejected by the Civilian
Emergency Authority (CEA) in Maluku, and they have even threatened us,” he
said.
Alex said the CEA should not be overly concerned by the flag-rising
ceremony. He added that the CEA should respond positively to our
activities and give guidance instead of violent threats.
Alex said he does not believe that the security forces will take harsh
action if the people raise the flag of the separatist RMS.
“We have tried to accommodate them by having the ceremony in the proper
location. We expect nothing less than a positive response from the
authority,” he added.
Alex denied speculations that his group, FKM is the resurrection of
separatist group, RMS. “No, not at all. FKM is not RMS. FKM attempts to
put history in its proper perspective. We do not represent RMS, we
represent an effort to look at history correctly,” he added.
