December, 2006 A while ago I read Consilience by Edward O. Wilson. I did write a book review at the time, and I've finally decided to put it up on my website.
November, 2005 No changes of substance. I have updated the HTML and CSS for these pages. Maybe they'll load a bit faster, and work a bit better with various browsers. Let me know.
July 25, 2004

Lots of changes. Note the new look. The old one has been getting a bit dated, and, frankly, it wasn't that great to start with. But to change everything took a lot of work.

I've removed a lot of stuff that I didn't want to keep around, like the Best Ever HTML and Javascript Help Pages. It was getting horribly outdated, and I really don't have the time to update it. The GeoTour is gone - GeoCities doesn't work that way, anymore. And I've removed my "Not the Worst of GeoCities" award list, as well as various associated stuff, like the Athens Community Leader pages. Well, change happens.

I've also added reviews of Ken Rand's Phoenix and Salman Rushdi's Satanic Verses, and of Antonio Damasio's Descartes' Error.

January 17, 2003 Hope you had a Happy New Year. I just got done reading Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart. This isn't a book for younger readers, but I recommend it strongly. Read what I thought of it.
September 28, 2002 You'd think that unemployment leaves me a lot of time to write and post reviews. It hasn't turned out that way. I've been layed off since April (anyone know of someone I should talk to? I've got my resume on monster.com, of course), and this is the first new review I've posted: Shadows of the Mind. It's Roger Penrose's response to criticism of The Emperor's New Mind. If you are into artificial intelligence, you may have heard of the arguments swirling around the Turing Halting Problem. Penrose fights a good fight, but I still think that he misses his mark.
November 28, 2001 Yes, it's been a long time, hasn't it. My life has been unaccountably busy, and that's still not changing. I've been reading lots of books, but, until Black Oxen, none I wanted to review badly enough to take the time here.
February 11, 2001 Harry Potter and his adventures are taking the world by storm. I've decided to share some of my thoughts on the phenomenon.
February 11, 2001 If you'd like to read some stories, or some poems that have been collecting over the past few months, have a look. I've added two new stories, and three new poems.
January 21, 2001 A year ago the book Taboo came out. It was praised and reviled by various critics, but I was initially going to ignore it. Now that I've read it, you can read why and what I thought in my first bookreview of the new millenium!
September 2, 2000 After reading Asphalt Nation I eagerly awaited the arrival of Suburban Nation, a book that I'd found in the library, but which was checked out at the time. When it finally arrived I found that it supplied what may be the solutions to the problems described in the earlier book. Read my bookreview to see what I thought.
August 16, 2000 I have only read two books by Connie Willis, but after reading the second, her 1995 story Remake, I've added her to my list of favorite authors.
August 13, 2000 Have you ever wondered why, with all the road construction that is going on, it takes ever longer to get where you're going? Asphalt Nation will give you an idea of what the trouble is, how we got into this mess, and how we might get out. I wrote a book review in case you're interested.
July 22, 2000 I've been reading yet another book, entitled Urban Legends. It is, curiously enough, a book about urban legends. I enjoyed reading all those versions that I hadn't heard before, but I was severly irritated by a number of the book's short comings. This review was written for the newsgroup alt.folklore.urban. Follow this link to read the review for yourself.

It's been almost five months since I last made a major addition to this site. No worries: it hasn't been abandoned. I've been busy. These things happen.

I just finished Eric Flint's 1632, and wrote a book review for it. Oh, and I've received a couple of design awards for my site. Neat stuff, right?

February 18, 2000 Ken Macleod has been described as a "steampunk" writer, a category that is related to science fiction's cyberpunk in terms of its gritty style and selfconfidence. I just read The Cassini Division, which is certainly not "steampunk," and which not only was a great read, but also got me thinking. Read why.
February 5, 2000 Now that it's the last year of the 20th Century, what has happened to our ambitions to colonize space, or even go to the stars? Dr. Zubrin explains why our current efforts are not enough, and how we're going to get there in the end. See what I thought of his book Entering Space.
January 22, 2000 For all that I seem to be busy enough, I manage to have time for reading. Just recently I finished James Burke's The Pinball Effect. I often thought that Burke's reasoning in his TV series was carried too far; see what I thought of his book.

If you've never read anything by Dave Barry, then you're probably unaware how close to the edge of the cultural abyss we are skating. If you are familiar with Dave Barry's writings, then you probably can't wait to get your hands on a copy of Big Trouble. See what I thought.

I also finished Eric Idle's The Road to Mars. The book was not as satisfying as I had hoped. I explain why in my book review.

October 23, 1999 I've been noticing Sheri Tepper's books a lot in the past few years, and picked up her latest, Singer from the Sea. I enjoyed reading the book, though I found a lot to complain about in the bookreview.
October 11, 1999 I just finished A Deepness in the Sky. Read my review and see why I loved this book. I've also finished putting together a small slideshow of my visit to my first granddaughter.
September 14, 1999

No, I haven't died.

A few months ago my computer died. Apparently the motor that controls the heads on the diskdrive wore out, and no longer tracked all the way across the disk. So I started getting all kinds of bizarre errors, where the computer thought it was looking for files in the right place, but the heads were in entirely the wrong place. To make a long story short, I had to buy a new drive, and reinstall a whole bunch of stuff. Luckily, only a few of my data files were on the bad disk, so not a lot was lost. Phew!

May 17, 1999

I wrote a book review of Elizabeth Moon's Once a Hero. The book isn't a recent one, but I decided I should read it before checking out Moon's latest Rules of Engagement.

May 12, 1999

Hm. It's been a long time, again. I seem to be making a habit of this. This time I've added two new book reviews, of Robert J. Sawyer's Illegal Alien, and of Connie Willis's To say Nothing of the Dog.

At some point in the past couple of months I apparently also finished Leonardo's Mountain of Clams and the Diet of Worms, another collection of essays by Steven Jay Gould. See what I thought.
