Donatello was born in Florence, Italy, about 1386. He worked as an assistant to sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. During the Renaissance he was a master of all the techniques and materials of sculpture. He died in 1466.
Donatello was a versatile sculptor, able to handle any subject in a most striking manner. His early style was realism based on humanism and the study of nature. Around 1428 his work took on a Classical look. Then around 1453 his style shifted again, to an intense personal expression. Pictured above is his "St. George" (1415-1417). Among his other famous works are: three statues of "David", "Lo Zuccone (The Pumpkinhead)" (1423-1425), "Gattamelata" (1445-1450) and "Mary Magdalene" (1454-1455).
