Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat stand firm in Hollywood
By Kot Dai Wai for World Journal. Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for April 29th! Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) will go through a change in her second Hollywood film Vertical Limit in which she will play a mountain climber who will challenge the Himalayas.
Yeung Chi King's manager Terence Chang (Cheung Ka Chun) expressed, in order to allow Yeung Chi King leave her "female fighter" image behind, they were extra cautious during the script selection process. Finally they signed on to do Vertical Limit, which will be directed by the director of Tomorrow Never Dies Roger Spottiswoode. The plot has yet been revealed, but the film will shoot in the Himalayas.
Earlier the Actors' Guild of America reportedly due to the problem of uneven profit sharing plans to conduct a massive strike in July, but Cheung Ka Chun confirmed that negotiations have been successful. Without the threat of a strike, the major studios have begun production on new films. Currently shooting The Corruptor in Toronto, Canada, Chow Yun Fat has been confirmed to star in a new production of The King and I.
Chow Yun Fat originally was set to star in John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s King's Ransom, but because John Woo and Tom Cruise are busy planning a script for Mission: Impossible 2, King's has been delayed until next year. Cheung Ka Chun said, Chow Yun Fat's character in the film will be obviously different than Yul Brynner's bald king, as Chow will be well mannered and stylish. The film is estimated to begin production at the end of the year in Malaysia and the Philippines.
Cheung Ka Chun said, the new film is not a musical as rumored, but a romantic drama, which will also be a new opportunity for Chow Yun Fat to change his image in Hollywood, which will allow the audience the magnetism of Fat Jai without a gun. - Kot Dai Wai, World Journal
Chow Yun Fat's King's Ransom might be delayed
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for April 1st! And thanks also to Alan Li, who courteously drew my attention to this story, and to Simon for earlier summarising it for me! Chow Yun Fat currently is working on The Corruptor in Toronto.
Reportedly after this film Fat Jai would work on another Hollywood film King's Ransom, but on the 3rd Fat Jai personally revealed on the set that King's production will likely be delayed until the beginning of next year due to a possible strike by the Actors Guild in July.
Fat Jai said, "During the production of this movie, I received a notice from my management agency saying that the Actors Guild of America will go on strike in July to fight for actors' overseas share percentage. Before both sides have reached an agreement, members of the Guild cannot accept any offers. As a member I support this movement. I think this strike will last from one to three months, thus I believe King will have to be delayed until the end of this year or the beginning of next."
Fat Jai and his wife will be traveling during that period. "I will be promoting The Replacement Killers in different nations. The final stop will be Spain. My wife and I will remain there to recharge ourselves."
During his days off, Fat Jai along with executives from Fox and his manager and producer Terence Chang (Cheung Ka Chun) prepared for the film The King and I.
Fox was rumored to be interested in Kate Winslet for the female lead, after the meeting Fat Jai said he has no opinion on casting. "During this meeting we mainly talked about director and lead actress choices. I never enjoy minding production matters, thus it's best for Fox and the management agency to decide on the cast. On top of that I still have not signed on officially, there are still a lot of production matters that
need to be confirmed."
Reportedly, besides "Fat Win", Fox also has approached other Hollywood actresses. Because the company would like to cast an English actress, "Fat Win" is one of the favorites for the role.
During the production of Corruptor, Fat Jai received a three day holiday and led the Hong Kong reporters on a visit to the Niagara Falls. "Although I have been here many times, my wife has never been here. So I am bringing everyone with us on this visit."
King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen) Fund has a movie collection but no money
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for April 1st! The Hong Kong Provincial City Council sponsored activity "Leap Forward and Cross Over: King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen) and Eileen Chang (Cheung Oi Ling)" would take place in April. During that period, "King Hu Film Exhibit" would run from April 3 to18 at the Hong Kong Cultural Center, and "Eileen Chang Literature Exhibit" would run between April 1 and 30 at the City Hall. On the 1st the sponsors invited Wu Kam Chuen's protege Cheng Pei Pei to attend the related press conference.
Cheng Pei Pei revealed after the passing King Hu he was buried in Los Angeles' Rose Hill cemetery. John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) donated his plot since Ng Yu Sum has purchased 5 consecutive plots. Thus in the future, Cheng Pei Pei joked, John Woo can continue to study film with Wu Kam Chuen.
Also, she has arranged Wu Kam Chuen's remains. He had over 200 boxes of related books, props and information. They also established a fund for Wu Kam Chuen in the U.S. The fund doesn't have any money, only Wu Kam Chuen's film collection, which will remain for future references.
As for Wu Kam Chuen's last wish, Wa Gung Huet Lui Si (Lit: Chinese Labor Blood Tear History) [a.k.a. The Battle of Ono], Ng Yu Sum has agreed to produce the film and the
project will cost US$ 15 million. Because of Ng Yu Sum, Chow Yun Fat has agreed to star, but he has asked for US$5 million for his role. Unfortunately, there still hasn't been a date for production because the film company is still measuring possible profit from the market.
