Chow Yun Fat's home is robbed
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for June 24th! And thanks also to Chris, who sent me a summary of this news from the Entertainment section of the Taiwanese World Journal, Toronto Edition. Since Chow Yun Fat has broken into Hollywood, he is rarely in Hong Kong. His Kowloon Tong home is mostly under the care of his in laws from Singapore. However, on the morning of the 28th, Fat Jai's in laws discovered that the house has been burglarized.
The safe in Fat Jai's master bedroom has been vandalized. The loss has been estimated at around 300,000. Among the materials stolen was an 200,000 antique watch, a favorite of Fat Soe, and other beloved antique jewelry and watches. Luckily no one was harmed.
According to the police, recently certain criminal organizations planned and timed criminal activities after learning from newspapers and magazines when artists will be out of town.
CYF Personally Responsible for Decline of HK film industry?
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for June 17th! From an article entitled "Sing Jai becoming a foreign film director is a loss to Hong Kong and Taiwan" in the Sing Tao Daily of June 20th, 1998:
".... Don't talk about the glory of Hong Kong stars going to Hollywood. Honestly, Hollywood wouldn't be affected much with a few more Hong Kong stars. However in terms of the depressed
Hong Kong market it's a loss. If Chow Yun Fat had stayed in Hong Kong, the box office figures of the past three years would at least increase by 200 to 300 million, not to mention overseas loss. According to a Korean film buyer, in the past Fat Gor's films with just his pictures added to a poster would attract an audience. With Fat Gor gone, Hong Kong film is almost done."
Whew! Feel guilty, CYF. :P
Chow Yun Fat will star in the new King and I
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for June 17th! The manager of Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) and John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), Terence Chang (Cheung Ka Chun) revealed a series of good news which proves the successes of Hong Kong film people in Hollywood.
Cheung Ka Chun expressed that Chow Yun Fat will star in the new King and I. The film company is interested in casting Emma Thompson as the lead actress. The film will begin production in the latter half of the year. Fat Jai will shave his head to play the late Yul Brynner's role and the film will shoot in Australia. After completing The Corruptor, Mr. and Mrs. Chow will return to Hong Kong and rest.
As for Yeung Chi King, earlier she met with Steven Spielberg about the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series with Harrison Ford. Besides that film, Yeung Chi King next year will perform in Ang Lee's Ngor Fu Chong Lung (Lit: Lying Tiger Hidden Dragon) and a romance for MGM. As for rumors that Yeung Chi King starring in Columbia's Vertical Limit or the film version of Charlie's Angels, Cheung Ka Chun refuted them all by saying the former's shoot in the Himalayas is too dangerous and the latter is a flower vase role and doesn't have much room for acting. Cheung Ka Chun joked that although her relationship with her American doctor beau is stable, he for now won't let her marry since her star will shining in Hollywood!
Cheung Ka Chun expressed that Ng Yu Sum currently has 6 films in preparation, one of which is The Last Word starring Paul Newman and Harrison Ford. As for Fat Jai's King's Ransom, the script is still beingwritten. He also has two collaborations with Tom Cruise, the sequel to Mission: Impossible will begin production in October, and a Chinese costume film Tai Ping Tin Gok (Lit: Peaceful Heavenly Nation), a spy film with Nicholas Cage Black September, a World War II Romance and a France period piece.
Return to the Return of the God of Gamblers?
Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for June 3rd! "Also, Heung Wa Sing revealed that next week he would have an
announcement. Reportedly, Mr. Heung plans to make 5 to 6 films in the remaining half of the year, one of which will be God of Gamblers III. In his heart Chow Yun Fat is the one and only God of Gamblers, but all will be determined by Fat Jai's schedule."
Given CYF's Hollywood commitments it seems unlikely ... alas. FYI, by my calculations this will be the 6th "God of Gamblers" film, and the 3rd "GoG3". Gotta love HK titles.
