Maltese
In Malta 360,000 people live, 320,000 of
them speakers of Maltese, the native language. English is
also official due to former British colonization. There are
also 28,000 speakers of Maltese in Italy. Maltese is
descended from Maghrebi Arabic but has borrowed heavily from
Italian; it is a separately developed form with different
syntax and phonology. Written in the latin script with
several diacritics (absent in our short list).
