ia desagertarazi zituzten. 1947tik Txina kontinentaletik
banandua dago Taiwan, eta Txinako Errepublika deritzo
ofizialki (ROC ingelesezko sigletan). Kontinenteko Txina,
estatu komunista, Txinako Herri Errepublika da (PRC
ingelesezko sigletan). Bi estatu hauek esaten dute Txina

- Taiwan was colonized by Chinese
settlers form the 17th century on. The aboriginal peoples
were displaced and almost wiped out. Since 1947 Taiwan is
divided from mainland comunist China and is officially
called the Republic of China (ROC), in contrast to the
People's Republic of China (PRC). Both states claim to be
representative of all of China, mainland and island, but
nobody cares much about the aboriginal taiwanese. One of
the principal native groups are the Atayal, and we have
a short placename list for them. Besides that, the
official Chinese language of Taiwan is Mandarin: the
usual vernacular in the island is Hoklo or Min,a southern
chinese language, spoken by 80% of the population.
