Buzzards and Gunship pilots, part 2S.C.Jones
Porch sittin with Ira the other day:
Hello my good man,
Man, that sun is hot today. You sure got it made down here. Them
amadillos still rootin up them tiny pecan trees? Lookit them out
there. You got it made.
Pecan's loadin them trees, amadillos poppin up all over; lazy hazy
day. What's that way up there? A what? No...that don't look like no
goose. Hmm? BUZZARD, you say! Don't look like no buzzard I ever saw.
You sure it ain't one of them Condors? no?...well he's given them
amarellos a good lookin over.
Buzzard...NO, that don't look like a damn buzzard, Ira. If I wasn't
down here in Texas, I'd swear it looked more like an eagle. You got
eagles?......well, it looks like an eagle to me.
Back home we now have lots of eagles. Yep, they're comin back. They go
kinda to themselves, and they hunt alone.....say you said something a
few weeks ago.....what...about flying alone. You remember? Yea,
that's it...coachin Rob Glasier on his inability to stay in formation.
Kinda tough on him maybe, hmm? Well, I know, I know...but
still......say that's a buzzard hmm?
If it was me Ira, I'd be herdin them amerillos into some safe place
about now. What's that...too heavy to lift? Nothing to grab onto?
yes, maybe so...
Those eagles I was telling you about there...you ever think about them?
no need? maybe...
You know, they say leaders are like eagles. They don't flock and you
find them one at a time. Yep, that's right. Kinda like buzzards.
Buzzards over Possum Kingdom Lake, if you get my drift. Well, I don't
know. You went and told Rob he was a buzzard, not me. New way a'lookin
ain't it? That sure don't look like a damn buzzard up there to me, Ira.
You know, your talking about going through flight school and not being
able to fly with the flock, got me to thinkin the other week. Yep, I
figure either your eyesight weren't none too good, or you was thinkin
subconsciously you was a buzzard. Well, first I figured maybe an eagle,
but now, I think maybe a buzzard. I know your eyesight's not bad; well
not then it wasn't. This buzzard theory of mine has some merit, Ira.
We can't help Rob, but he'll get over it.
Now if I remember, you said you liked to hang around at three thousand
feet and Rob said he liked lookin for somethin to kill. Well, I can
tell you right now, that ain't no damn goose. Sure, it sounds like a
buzzard or maybe a condor, but when has a buzzard ever looked to pick up
something that is not already dead? Now, I don't know buzzards and
condors, so you correct me if I'm wrong, but I know eagles. Eagles will
swoop down from three thousand feet in a heartbeat. They can pluck a
shrew out of a thimble and soar back for another round. They will look
a mole in the eye at three thousand feet. They will have conversation
with a meadow mouse at that altitude. Will a buzzard do that?.....kinda
fits the image of a gunship pilot, don't it?
Now, I know you been thinkin all these years about buzzards and all, but
maybe it's just because you are isolated back here in Texas. I mean,
you got them amaderros runnin all over and it kinda gets a little too
peaceful. You know what I mean? Yea, I thought so. Well you just
need to adjust a mite and your back in harmony again, see. Those bird
books you been readin may not have all the answers. It's a good thing
I'm here tellin ya this Ira. You've been an Eagle all these years, Ira,
and you've takin on the sins of a Buzzard with your thinkin.
Pecan? don't mind if I do. thank you....You...ah...got quite a spread
here friend. How do you sell them ambadeos? Seems a strange way to
make a livin to me. You could write a book there Ira. Yep,
"Ammadilloe's Domain" by Ira Will McComic. May be one of a kind.
Start a trend. Amadillos will replace lama's and pigmy pigs in the next
pet craze to sweep the nation. Give a bag of pecans with every sale.
God, these visits do me good, Ira. This has been enjoyable, but I've
gotta go now.
What's that? Hmm? ...yea, it does kinda look like an eagle now that
you look at it that way. A mighty pretty bird too, ain't she? What's
that? Goin ta get them amadillos under cover are you?
Good for you Ira, good for you.
Take care my friend.
