MIKE'S POETRY AND SHORT STORIES PAGE

TOUCHED BY A DRAGON
I clumsily fell out of a wagon and hit my head.
I died of embarrassment, a tough way to be dead.
I was carried off and profusely cried over.
My broken pride was encircled with clover,

Drinking and dancing were being enjoyed.
A dash of scented herbs upon me deployed.
A few kind words and then it was ended.
I layed there and wondered while I descended,

Then all at once my eyes opened wide.
I sat up and saw that I was inside,
a dragons den, with a lousy smell.
I figured I must be close to hell.

I stood and looked all around.
I found myself hitting the ground.
Someone laughed and said with charm,
"Stay there and you'll come to no harm."

I turned to see who was chortling at me.
I stared and gawked at what I could see.
A giant red dragon as big as they come.
He moved closer, well, as big as some.

He said, "Smile, you're in no danger.
I always help those that are stranger.
You're scrawny and thin, without much meat,
but I'm not hungry, so you I won't eat."

"So, what seems to be the trouble with you?
You die from embarrassment? Is this true?
I will heal you if you will do me one favor,
when you get back home, this you must savor:"

"A man with too much pride, will find himself dead,
from embarrassment, more often, then from landing on his head."
With that the dragon reached out a claw.
I fell unconscious as he touched my jaw.

I woke up dizzy and pulled the sheet from my head.
I sat up slowly and then jumped out of bed.
I went outside and everyone stopped cold.
I remembered the words that the dragon told.

I thought for a moment and then with a grin,
I knew who I was and where I had been.
I looked around and jumped up on a wagon.
"I was cured... you see... by the touch... of a dragon".
