The God Complex

It's that burning desire to control the world, to hold life in your hands, to never be told no. It's the God complex. Almost everyone has it, and there is no cure. No cure that is, except to play god for a little while. At first, the power, the control is exhilarating. It is freedom at last. Doctors determine life or death. They have within their hands the life and health of dozens of persons daily. They decide whether or not to advise risky surgery. They choose who gets the donated heart. Writers create worlds of their own. What they say goes. If they say it was a dark and stormy night, you'd better believe it was pouring. Nothing happens that they don't say happens. They hold our imaginations in their hands. Politicians make laws for everyone to follow. They decide what is good and bad for the city, the state, the nation. They hold our conscience in their hands. The se are the just some of the powers we play god with. Are we not free if we rule over that which binds us, if we control death, the mind, and conscience? Are we not gods in our own right? What do you think? Try being a god without believers. You cannot do it. You cannot control without having someone to serve. That is the curse of the God complex. Ultimate control means ultimate servitude, ultimate responsibility. The doctors learn they cannot save everyone. The writers hit a block and cannot create a person or place. The politicians find a difficult issue and cannot find a right answer. The doctors lose their patents. The writers lose their readers. The politicians lose their votes . The gods have lost their freedom. The gods have lost their believers. The gods no longer want to be responsible for death, the mind and conscience. They are cured of the complex. Next comes guilt. It's that burning desire to be free of responsibility to the world...
