(a poem partly in E-prime by Capt. Nemo)
Down in the basement,
Underneath the floor,
At the place where all the dreams meet,
There's no one keeping score.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
Thoreau built a cabin,
Gandhi made a march,
Einsein had a vision,
And Napoleon built an arch.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
The Greeks gave us logic,
The Romans gave us law,
The French gave us a statue,
Then the women got the vote.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
Kant once talked to Hegel,
Hegel talked to Marx,
Russell talked to Maynard,
The fight gave off some sparks.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
Some states count the votes,
Even when it's close,
Others on machines,
Seem to have pinned all of their hopes.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
Jews go to a temple,
Catholics go to church,
Arabs go to mosques,
And that's OK with me.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
Patterns of potential develop into space,
Opposites cancell out,
And we all can find a place.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
The schools preceded factories,
In European lands.
The people keep their culture,
If that is how it stands.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
If factories are developed
Before libraries built,
Then folks will be mistreated,
And churches will teach guilt.
Fish are in the ocean, flowers in the trees,
Trees are in the mountains,
And the're there for you to see.
