The word Logos has strong roots within Coptic Literature. Logos is originally translated from Greek as "the Word." Nevertheless, as H.H. Pope Shenouda III has explained, St. Jerome's translation of Logos as the "Word" is part and parcel of its meaning. Taken from the Greek word liego(logic), Logos has over 15 meanings. It is widely applied to refer to all pervading reason, intelligence, mind, power, or wisdom of the universe.
Jesus Christ. It is the "Word" that defines the second Hypostasis (reality) of God through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. In Revelations 19:13 it is written, "He was clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and His Name is called the Word of God." Here it is told to St. John the Evangelist that Jesus Christ was the Logos. Consequently, St. John refers to Our Lord Jesus Christ as the Word in the opening of his Gospel: "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." This Logos then "became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). When praying the introduction to the Prime Hour, in the "Faith of the Church" (just before Psalm 1), in the Gospel of the Third Hour, and in the Second Piece of the Third Hour, we address Jesus Christ as the Word.
Wisdom/Mind. When we read the verse in St. John's Gospel, "the word was with God," the Logos is interpreted as the "wisdom" or the "mind" of God. "The Word" is used throughout the Agpeya when describing the infinite wisdom and glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ. God created the world through this wisdom. It is also this very wisdom that God gave to man. When Abraham was distressed, the word of the Lord cam to him in a vision telling him of his offspring (Gen 15:1-6).
Power. The Word of God is all mighty, all powerful--able to create, orchestrate, and obliterate. In Psalm 33:6, it is written, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth." It is by the Word that God has given us life (Psalm 119:50). Moreover, in Hebrews 4:12 it is written "The word of the Lord is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit..."
The Law. The Word of the Lord further signifies the heavenly commandments; the laws given by God. In Psalm 119:10, we read "Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Moses gave the Hebrews this word in Deuteronomy 5:5. The Word of God is the supreme law, which He shall judge us by. The Bible itself is often described as the word of God as well, because it contains these heavenly commands.
Good News. St. Luke the Evangelist uses Logos throughout his writings as the good news of Christ spread by the apostles. In Acts 4:29 and 31, St. Peter and St. John "speak the word of God with boldness." the word of God here takes the form of the eloquent and persuasive speeches spoken to the people. This was the news of the resurrection of Christ and the need for the people to follow.
We have created this newsletter to convey five similar goals for the Coptic community--presenting the life of Jesus Christ, providing wisdom and insight, demonstrating the power of the Coptic community, presenting the dogma and laws of the church, and spreading the good news.
