Adam Smith |
Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy, not long after the death of his father. The precise date of Smith's birth is unknown, but he was baptised on 5 June 1723. He was educated at Glasgow University and for some years held the Chair of Logic there, but in 1764 he went to France as tutor to the Duke of Buccleuch, then returned to live quietly in Kirkcaldy for the next ten years, and it was here that he wrote his famous work "The Wealth of Nations" (1776). Smith was Commissioner of Customs in Edinburgh from 1778, and was a well-known figure in the city's intellectual circles. He died in Edinburgh on 17 July 1790.
