Iain Crichton Smith (Iain Mac a'Ghobhainn)



Smith was born on Lewis on 1 January 1928 and was educated at the University of Aberdeen. He writes in both English and Gaelic. His first poetry collection was published in 1955, and his best-known novel is "Consider the Lilies" (1968). After completing his National Service with the Army Education Corps he worked as a school teacher (in Clydebank, Dumbarton and Oban) from 1952 until 1977, when he retired to concentrate on writing. He has made an OBE in 1980. AC
