During
the 1998/99 school year, our fifth grade students at Orchard
School
of Science began a program where they authored their own books.
As the
students worked cooperatively, they made sure that their stories
included
all the important components of a story.
As soon
as a rough copy was completed, we
sent
them over to our partner, John Hay High School.
The
art students then began to work on the illustrations to
match
our stories. As soon as the illustrations
were
completed, they were returned to us and
the
books were copied and assembled.
The
books were submitted to the "Young Authors"
program
and critiqued.
The
authors and illustrators met once in the fall at Orchard to
get
acquainted. During this meeting, the students exchanged
ideas
and rough sketches were drawn.
Springtime
led us to John Hay High School
for
a brief luncheon. The students were presented
with
certificates and their own copy of the finished product.

We
are looking to expand our project and involve more student authors. If
you are a high school art teacher and would like to participate in our
project, please Email me at
