Troubleshooting Lotus Notes & MIX

Typical User Problems with Possible Solutions

Problem 1: Unable to Launch Program

Problem 2: "Wrong Password"

Problem 3: "ID File Corrupted" (Incompatible ID File Type)

Problem 4: No Access to Databases

Problem 5: "File Truncated": Attached File Cannot Be Detached

Computers using remote access (RAS) have had their attachment access purposely disabled. This is because the "replicated" databases reside on their hard drive. Replicating the full database with all its attachments might overwhelm the hard drive, not to mention the extended phone line time. Apparently, the ability to send attached files via RAS has also been disabled on remote installations of Notes.

As Mike Ritter writes in a comment on "USING MIX FROM A PROFIT LAPTOP" (Shared Learnings / PC Tips), "One drawback to using MIX from a Profit laptop is the inability to download and open any attachments in an Idea, Best Practice, etc. For a territory counselor to access an attachment, someone in their district office will have to open and print the document, spreadsheet, etc. for them."

In other words, there is no way to get around this "problem," as it is by design. Associated files will have to be downloaded by someone on a direct network connection, or by some other means (e.g., placing the file on the common drive for retrieval).

Note also that under "Replication Settings" (File / Database / Information / Replication), at least on some installations, Notes is set to "Truncate large documents and remove attachments." It is unclear what Notes considers a "large" document, but that could certainly be the source of some of the attachment confusion.

One solution to accessing truncated files, however, might be this: After highlighting the attached file, Notes allows you to select View / Refresh Truncated Document. This normally produces a list of databases, by author, residing on a server. Presumably, the file contents have been placed on that server by the author. However, if you cannot access that server, you still cannot access the file.
