Jesus Continues to Preach (Matthew 6-7).

Jesus taught saying:

“Beware of practising your piety in front of people so as to make them look at you with admiration, for then you will receive no reward from your Father in Heaven.

When you give help to anyone, do not make a great display about it, like hypocrites do in the streets and places of worship, so that men will admire and praise them. I tell you emphatically that they have their reward. Rather when you give assistance, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your assistance may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

And when you pray you must not be like those who put on an act, for they love to stand and pray in places of worship and on street corners so that men will see them. I tell you emphatically they have their reward. But when you pray go to your room and shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

And when you fast, do not look dismal like the false playactors, for they disfigure their faces so that men may see that they are fasting. I tell you emphatically they have their reward. But when you fast, keep your hair tidy and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Do not try to store up riches for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust will eat away at them, and where thieves will break in and steal them, but store up your riches in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust can eat them up, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your riches are, there is your heart as well.

The eye is the illuminator of the body. So if you use your eyes rightly, your whole body will be full of light, but if you use your eyes wrongly, your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the light that is in you is darkness, that darkness is very great indeed.

No one can serve two masters, for they will either hate the one and love the other, or will be devoted to the one and despise the other. So you cannot serve both God and earthly possessions.

Therefore I tell you firmly, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more important than food, and the body than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow, nor reap, nor store in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they? And which of you by thinking can add a few years to his lifespan?

And why are you anxious about what to wear? Look well at how the flowers in the field grow. They neither work hard nor spin, and yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not decked out like one of these. So if God clothes the grass in the fields like this, which today thrives, but tomorrow is thrown on the bonfire, will he not much more clothe you, you doubters?

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have its own anxieties, let today’s trouble be sufficient for today.

Do not be constantly judging others, lest you yourselves be judged as well, for you will be judged by your own standards, and the measure by which you measure others will be the measure against which you will be measured.

Why do you notice the tiny speck in your brother’s eye, and not notice the great plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘let me take that tiny speck out of your eye’, when there is a great plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first remove the great plank from your own eye, then you will see clearly to take the tiny speck out of your brother’s eye.

Do not give dogs what is holy and precious, and do not toss your pearls to pigs, lest they trample them under their feet and then savage you.

Ask, and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you, for everyone who asks, receives, he who seeks, finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Who of you, if his child asks for bread will give him a stone, or if he ask for a fish will give him a snake? If you then, being evil at heart, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him? So whatever you would like men to do to you, do the same to them as well, for this is the Scripture (the Law and the Prophets).

Enter by the difficult gate. For the gate is wide and way is easy that leads to destruction, and the many enter by it. But the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who enter it are few.

Beware of those who teach falsely. They will come to you dressed like innocent sheep, but underneath they are devouring wolves. You will know them by how they live. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? So every good tree produces good fruit,, but the bad trees produce evil fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the bonfire. So you will know them by their fruits.

Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter under the Kingship of Heaven, only he who does the will of my Father, who is in Heaven. On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord did we not preach in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? And I will then declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Leave my presence, you who practised wrongdoing’.

So everyone who hears my words and obeys them, will be like a wise man who built his house on a foundation of rock, and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the wind blew and beat on that house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock. And everyone who hears my words and does not carry them into practise, will be like a foolish man who built his house with drifting sand as its foundation. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and its collapse was very spectacular.
