GOLDEN WORDS

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

John 13:34-35 KJV

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

John 13:34-35 -  NASB

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

John 13:34-35 - NIV

The height of our love for God will never exceed the depth of our love for one another.

"Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!" Exodus 32:24;

How preposterous! "You know the people...that they are prone to evil" v.22. Aaron said nothing about the mold he made or the graving tool he used. Aaron blamed society and we're still doing it. Give the crowd what they want and then blame them when the gold and what we in our finite wisdom thought was good for them finally destroys them. Actually, our progenitor Adam started the blame game: "The man said, `The woman you put here with meshe gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it'" Genesis 3:12. Eve took it from there.

We have all sinned and we have all blamed nature and them. "They" made us do it. Society makes us murderers and adulterers because it makes such stringent laws, so we reason. Moses literally broke the commandments in indignation at the sin he witnessed; we break God's commandments in indignation that our so called freedom is curtailed and then we blame others when that so called freedom grows a bumper crop of unexpected problems.

"But they all alike began to make excuses" Luke 14:18. Everyone does it, so it can't be too wrong for us to do it; We're victims of a corrupt society; God put us in the furnace of affliction and we came out burned. At one time, children's shirts were sold that had emblazoned on them, "The devil made me do it." That's as good an excuse as all the others combined.

Someone described an alibi as an excuse that's cooked up, but is always half baked. Benjamin Franklin made a couple of observations that have stood the test of time and human nature: "The absent are never without fault, nor the present without excuse" and "He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else."

"For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ."

When the black clouds gather most, the light is the more brightly revealed to us. When the night lowers and the tempest is coming on, the Heavenly Captain is always closest to his crew.

"He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."

The Holy Ghost is no temporary gift, he abides with the saints. We have but to seek him aright, and he will be found of us.

The Dirty Heart of Snow

After I graduated from Dallas Seminary, waiting on my first ministry, I went home to live with my mother. My mom gave me chores. She said, "One of your jobs is to take out the trash, Son." So every week I put out the garbage.

One week I forgot to put out the garbage. Garbage has a way of making itself known. It began to smell. Every day we kept piling more garbage onto it. It even began to spill over, and it was right where you came into the back of the house. Every time we went into the house we would get a whiff of it.

The aroma began to seep into the house and infected the atmosphere. Then it started to infect my mom's relationship with me. Every time she looked at me, it was as if she were saying, "Why don't you take out the garbage?"

The next week, I took out the garbage. The atmosphere cleaned up. Our relationship was better. Everything was okay.

My brothers and sisters, if you don't take out the garbage on a daily basis, it piles up. It begins to stink. It can pollute your relationships and cause you to move further away from people. So if we want to be cleansed by God, we must confess to God and put out the garbage on a daily basis.

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.

Today's  Devotion

But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Job 16:5 (NIV)

Kind Nourishment

by Cathy Vinson

King Saul unwisely ordered an untimely fast for his war-torn men. It weakened them and bent them even lower. In contrast to this, Jesus approaches the weary and ragged..."A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out" (Is 42:3). "Come unto Me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11:28). He knows what we need. Consider His tenderness:

To His weary people..."Comfort, comfort My people," says your God. 'Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her HARD SERVICE has been completed" (Is 40:1).

To the fearful and guilt-ridden brothers of Joseph, Joseph through the Spirit "reassured them and spoke kindly to them" (Gen 50:21).

Inspiring the prayer of the repentant and broken King David..."Let me hear joy and gladness, let the bones You have crushed rejoice...Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation" (Ps 51:8,12).

When the layers have been peeled away, the comfort of a kind word adds the felt nourishment of joy and gladness. He knows. In the hour of our greatest need, He sent His Son (Rom 5:8). He can send the word fitly spoken.

We praise Him. When we were prepared for a fast, He has planned a feast.

"Come unto Me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest"

(Matthew 11:28)

...the comfort of a kind word adds the felt nourishment of joy and gladness.
